Annual Festival in honor of the Kokanee Salmon this weekend
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/01/2014 - 11:26pmLast year, a government shut down caused the annual South Lake Tahoe festival that honors the Kokanee Salmon to be canceled, though nobody told the fish. Highway 89 was lined with cars since people had to walk in to view the fish spawning as well as enjoying fall foliage.
Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 3:43pm9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.
After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
Update: Meadow Fire in Yosemite has burned over 2,500 acres
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/07/2014 - 7:05pm9/8/14 6:45 p.m. update: The Meadow Fire in Yosemite grew considerably overnight and has burned about 2,582 acres so far. What started as a small fire after lightning on August 16 got out of control on Sunday.
According to Yosemite's website, it is burning within the Little Yosemite Valley on both sides of the Merced River. All trails in the area are closed. Earlier Monday, approximately 100 hikers and backpackers were evacuated from the fire area in LYV. The fire is burning in Yosemite Wilderness.
Local students benefit from Soroptimist's Backpack Attack
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/23/2014 - 3:38pmSome South Lake Tahoe students in grades K-12 will be going to school on Monday with a backpack full of supplies filled up and donated by Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra.
Every year the group launches "Backpack Attack" to ensure students in need will have a new backpack and school supplies. JANSPORT donated 50 backpacks this year, and club members donated the items to go inside.
The backpacks are going to the families of clients at Live Violence Free.
Lake Tahoe Has Select Force of Wildland Firefighters
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/09/2014 - 6:55pmLake Tahoe is now home to the Tallac Hotshots, a select force of 20 wildland firefighters from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
The group completed a demanding and extensive certification process on June 19, making them the first Interagency Hotshot Crew from Lake Tahoe.
Formerly the Tallac Hand Crew, the Tallac Hotshots join an exclusive group of roughly 2,000 firefighters across the country.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is seeking an arrest warrant for James Michael Valero on three felony counts and one misdemeanor count following an attack Tuesday night on a 92 year old World War II veteran.

The seven panelists have lived in Lake Tahoe a combined 600 plus years and shared some great stories with the overflowing crowd at Camp Richardson Lodge on Tuesday evening. In fact, the number of long time locals in the audience was very evident since their combined years of living in Lake Tahoe was over 1880!

Popular Stanford Professor Dies in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/04/2013 - 10:53amClifford Nass, a popular professor at Stanford University, passed away at South Lake Tahoe's Stanford Camp on Saturday, November 2. He was well known for his studies on the way people interact with technology and for his work on individual differences associated with multi-tasking.
Nass, 55, was in South Lake Tahoe to attend the fall Staff and Faculty Weekend at Stanford Camp which is located on the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake. He suffered a heart attack.
Assault Victim Able to Describe Assailant

The victim has now determined that the assault occurred in the vicinity of Meyers, South Lake Tahoe. Details of the original account have changed, possibly due in part to the injuries the victim suffered in the violent physical attack.

The victim changed her story according to Alpine County Undersheriff Rob Levy according to the newspaper. “She wasn’t attacked in Alpine County and there was no one posing as a law enforcement officer” according to Levy.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation will host the Fall Fish Festival Oct. 5-6, offering a variety of free, fun events with the beautiful backdrop of Taylor Creek in the fall.
Formerly the Kokanee Salmon Festival, the Fall Fish Festival will focus on the variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its rivers. In addition to the Kokanee, these species include the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout and little-known smaller fish, such as speckled dace.
Former South Lake Tahoe Resident Faces Second Murder Charge
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/09/2013 - 6:35pmFormer South Lake Tahoe resident George Aaron Carver, 40, was arraigned in San Bernardino on charges he committed another murder over the Labor Day weekend. Carver, who was a patient at Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, was charged with the first degree murder of fellow patient, Kenneth Taylor, 65.
In 2006, Carver was sentenced to 4 years in prison for the hammer attack on a Cool, Calif., man. While serving time in the Napa State Prison he was charged with the murder of patient David Wengall. He was found guilty of manslaughter on that charge.

Anthony Corbin is a confirmed member of the South Lake Tahoe Brotherhood Motorcycle Club. In mid-March Corbin was identified as the suspect who severely beat a 34-year-old South Lake Tahoe man.

Karl Koeppen, shift commander for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, said minimal damage was done to the structure and interior of the home, located in the Pioneer Village area. The fire burned the deck structure but did not creep into the interior. The residents were allowed to stay in the house after the fire was knocked down.
