Loved ones remembered at Light up a Life

As the days get shorter approaching the winter solstice, we count on the holiday gatherings and Christmas lights in our community to brighten up our lives. For many people, the parties and celebrations in this season are a poignant reminder of what has changed in the past year. Some of the people that have been part of our traditions are no longer here. What we think should be the “happiest time of the year” just seems all wrong.

On Wednesday morning, December 23, 2015, my wife and best friend, Charlene Middlebrook lost her long and courageous battle with cancer. As with everything she did, Charlene handled the cancer and a subsequent stroke, with grace, courage, total resolve and of course her humor and her smile, once again being the hero in our family. Charlene and I met here in Tahoe 35 years ago and soon discovered that we had both grown up in Southern California about two miles apart.

Barton Hospice encourages people who have experienced the loss of a loved one or have endured a significant, life-altering event to attend the ongoing bereavement group called "Reflections of Life and Loss." This group helps teach attendees how to cope with certain situations and encourages emotional connections with others. Support and bereavement groups allow people to release emotions they may otherwise keep to themselves. It can improve a participant's mood and decrease psychological distress.
