When students make their way through the doors of classrooms in Lake Tahoe Unified School District on Monday, 22 new certified staff members will be there to greet them.

Young fans line up to watch elite women cyclists in Thursday's Amgen

It's not every day that elite cyclists come to your hometown for an international race, so when they do, take advantage of it. Students from Bijou Community School walked to the corner of Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd. on Thursday to watch Stage 1 of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Race.

As the women raced by the young fans, they heard the chanting of "U.S.A" and the sounds of cowbells.

After a race around Lake Tahoe, Stage 1 for the women ended with Megan Guarnier of the United States in first. Here are the winners Thursday:

El Dorado County approves Safe Routes to School Plan for South Lake Tahoe

During their April 19 meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s Safe Routes to School Master Plan. With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.

Kindergarten Round Up for all perspective students

Its time again for kindergarten enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Registration for the 2016-17 school year is being held from May 2 through May 6 at all local elementary schools for children will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2016.

Children who will be five years of age between September 1, 2016 and December 2, 2016 qualify for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Members of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) handed out checks to 22 different project that are created by non-profits to serve the women and children of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bijou Community School

The iconic Dr. Seuss would have been 112 years old today, and even though not still living, his birthday is celebrated with top hats, green eggs and ham and lots of reading out of his collection of books that has delighted generations.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., and adopted the name Dr. Seuss when he was in college.

In honor of his birthday, students at Bijou Community School in South Lake Tahoe celebrated with stories, costumes and green eggs and ham.

SOS launches programs at Heavenly with 75 local youth

SOS Outreach, a non-profit serving South Lake Tahoe youth, launched their winter mountain program at Heavenly Ski Resort this weekend. Vail Resorts and Heavenly donate instructors, gear and access to the mountain. For their first day on the mountain Saturday, SOS had 75 at risk and underserved youth for day one of a five day Learn to ski/snowboard Program.

SOS uses core values and positive adults while teaching youth to ski or snowboard.
Each day of activities staff and youth participate in has a focus, and this first day on the slopes was "courage".

Hard Rock Lake Tahoe donates school supplies to Bijou Community School

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe employees recently donated 558 school supply items to Bijou Community School. The property-wide donation drive was coordinated by the property's H.R. Manager, Didi Aspero. They collected items such as notebooks, binders, and pencils. They also donated $500.

A whopper of a fish tops the scales during Kid's Fishing Derby

"I'm usually a bass fisherman," explained 11-year-old Casey Holden. "I only fish for trout during this derby."

The sixth grader from Fairfield-Suisun Valley Elementary had the catch of the day on Sunday during the 14th annual Moose Lodge Fishing Derby held at Lake Baron inside Tahoe Paradise Park. The first fish he reeled in was 3 lbs 7 oz after about 90 minutes of fishing. As soon as he got that one off the hook he cast another line and within a minute caught the one that ended up being the biggest of the day, a 7 lb 5 oz rainbow trout.

Time to register for Lake Tahoe Unified schools

With school starting on August 31, its now time for children entering South Lake Tahoe schools for the first time to register,

Kindergartners need to be registered at their designated elementary school, as determined by location. Boundaries are available for viewing at www.ltusd.org or a map can be picked up at the Education Center at 1021 Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

LCAP 101: What is it and how you can participate?

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be holding a public hearing Tuesday on how to spend an estimated $2,159,294 in LCAP funding. They want parents to participate in the decision making and have invited everyone to the June 9 School Board meeting to encourage participation.

South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten sign-ups

Sign-ups for both kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in Lake Tahoe Unified Schools will be held May 4 - May 8.

To be eligible for enrollment a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015. If your child will turn five years of age between September 2 and December 2, 2015, they qualify for transitional kindergarten which is a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

To register, California Law requires that:

1. You bring child's birth certificate;

Enrollment up slightly at South Lake Tahoe schools

After several years of declining enrollment, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has seen more students sitting the seats of local schools over the past two years.

The lowest enrollment figures were for the school year 2012-2013. When school ended in June of 2013 there were 3,793 students in South Lake Tahoe's eight schools.

When school started back up in the Fall of 2013 there were 3,855 students enrolled. An additional 26 students started off this school year.

The first week of school in South Lake Tahoe is in the books, and the early numbers show that enrollment is up for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's seven schools.

Many students had to miss the first day of school since they didn't have their paperwork and immunizations completed, which are both required to attend local schools.

Angie Keil, the Public Information Officer for LTUSD, said that it was a hectic first week of school but so far the enrollment numbers show that there are 3,877 students in school. This is up by 156 from the end of school figures from June.

Kudos: Bijou Community School's NEW PLAYGROUND

The Bijou Community Playground represents a community effort and shows what we can do when we all come together and each do a little. "Many hands make for light work" is a true phenomenon here at Bijou School. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

This project has been the epitome of a community effort with over 40 donors helping the school's PTA raise over $100,000.

Lake Tahoe Attracts Top-Notch Physicians

Physicians are in high demand, but not just from patients. With an impending physician shortage and more job competition, medical administrators and recruiters will spend hours attending meetings, networking, and recruiting to hire top-notch physicians.

In a 2012 study, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) estimated that physician recruitment costs between $75,000 and $90,000 per doctor. This does not include the time and effort to set up a medical practice and then to retain a physician.

Kindergarten, middle school and high school registration for South Lake Tahoe schools in August

Registration for kindergarten at South Lake Tahoe schools will be held on August 4th. South Tahoe Middle School registration for new students will be held on August 12 and for new students at South Tahoe High August 11-14.

The first day of school is August 25th.

LTUSD Retirees Honored at School Board Meeting Tuesday

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation honored the seven school district employees who are retiring this year during a reception held at the school district board meeting Tuesday night.

Three were in attendance and they received an award and gift certificate to Sprouts: Steve Simmons, teacher at Mt. Tallac and employee for 25 years; Bonnie Oliver, preschool aide at Al Tahoe and employee for 16 years; and Judy Ward, bus driver for 9 years.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for First South Lake Tahoe Community Garden

The South Tahoe Family Resource Center, next to Bijou Community School, will be holding a ground breaking ceremony from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for their new community garden.

The Family Resource Center (FRC) community garden will showcase a variety of permaculture techniques that help increase productivity and extend our short growing season. The grant will fund a permanent fence to protect the FRC garden as well as garden-related materials, seeds and soil.

South Lake Tahoe Kindergarten Registration Held May 5 - May 9

Registration for South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten will be held May 5th through May 9th.

Bijou Community School PTA Hosts Dinner and Show

A Time of Giving: Moose Lodge Leads Effort to Help Out 20 South Lake Tahoe Families

The Christmas season is a bit brighter for 20 South Lake Tahoe families who all received boxes full of food donated by the local Moose Lodge and their community partners. During the past week, students at Bijou Community School decorated the boxes which held the food donations.

In order to help the families, who are part of the Family Resource Center, Moose Lodge member Robbie Koth conducted a donation drive in the community. He raised enough to donate a large ham and food supplies to each family.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up

For the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.

This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

Barton Health grant applications open

In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. The total grant amount available for 2012 is set at $25,000 and is generally dispersed between five and 10 local organizations.

Livestrong, American Century give $100,000 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

The holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”
