Get back on track with Barton Health's diabetes education class "Diabetes 101" on Thursday, March 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Barton University, located at 1113 Emerald Bay Road, #1, South Lake Tahoe. Registered dietitian, Jen Trew, will discuss healthy eating and diabetic diet planning basics. She'll also provide basic knowledge about diabetes and the role of different macronutrients and blood sugar control. Lab glucose goals, HgBA1C, lipids and blood pressure also will be discussed.

Freestyle skiing trailblazer Sarah Burke dies after Jan. 10 training accident

Canadian freeskier Sarah Burke died Thursday in a Salt Lake City hospital, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah. Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
Tests revealed Burke suffered "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool.

Approximately 2 to 3.5 million sports-related concussions occur annually in the United States, of which 60,000 are sustained by high school athletes. On December 16th at 8:30 AM, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded to a traffic collision on Cedar Ave. When they arrived on scene, they found a white Toyota pickup had crashed into the back side of the Ski Haus Lodge located at 977 Park Ave. The Toyota stuck a natural gas main that was spewing gas into the lodge and the odor could be smelled a block away.
