Decorated fire truck schedule: Lake Valley

The longstanding tradition of a decorated fire truck in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers continues again in 2018. Here is the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's holiday engine neighborhood schedule. The truck runs December 11-23, 2018.

STHS girls soccer team meets Truckee in state championship; Volleyball state run ends

UPDATE: South Tahoe started with the first goal of the match and led at the half 3-1 over Truckee. The second half was a different story and they couldn't score. Truckee wins State with their 4-3. South Tahoe is second best in state...a great reward for your year-long efforts Vikings and we can't wait for next year!

It is state championship season for fall sports with both the girls soccer and volleyball teams from South Tahoe High School.

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe as weather permits

California State Parks, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe. Operations may take place near Glenbrook on the East Shore; near Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder and California lodges, near Twin Peaks and in Baldwin Meadow on the South Shore; in D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near Rubicon Estates on the West Shore; and on urban lots in Kings Beach on the North Shore.

Nevada Gaming Control Board: South Shore casino revenue drops in September

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of September 2018 showed a slight increase over the previous year, posting a gain of 1.26 percent with a "win" of $991,222,034 for casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Public comment sought on future Interstate 11 from Las Vegas to Northern Nevada

The public has the opportunity to comment on the Nevada segment of Interstate 11 (I-11), a planned four-lane highway from Mexico to Canada. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking public input on recommended corridor alternatives for the future I-11 connecting Las Vegas and northwestern Nevada.

South Shore casinos continue to show gains in reported revenues

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of August 2018 dropped when compared to the same month in 2017, posting a loss of 7.74 percent with a "win" of $912,980,589 for casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

On the South Shore, the $26,789,111 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up by 4.74 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,650,518, up 2.77 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Report

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma and the Echo Summit area. There may be some missing calls due to sheriff's logs not being completed at time of story.

Ferguson Fire 100% contained; firefighters gaining control on most others

There are still several fires burning in California but firefighters have gained the upper hand on many of them.

Ferguson Fire: The Ferguson Fire is now at 96,901 acres with 100 percent containment and 881 personnel currently engaged on the fire. During the most critical time in the fire, over 3,000 people were assigned to the incident from all over the world. There have been 2 fatalities and 19 injuries. 10 structures have been destroyed.

Bus service faces drastic change in South Lake Tahoe; Public meeting Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Public comment closes this week on plans released by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) that address issues the agency is facing to be sustainable. Major changes are in store for riders.

Four plans were created as bus service cannot continue as it currently is due to several factors, including the cost of fleet replacement and improvement, funding availability and forecasted funds, regulatory compliance, and keeping and attracting drivers and staff.

Most of Nevada sees gains in gaming revenue again in May

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of May was up 5.29 percent in 2018 when compared to the same month in 2017, bringing in a "win" of $1,044,079,556 to casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

On the South Shore, the $18,022,230 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up 1.14 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,931,012, up 15.58 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Most of Nevada sees gains in gaming revenue in April

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of April was up 7.5 percent in 2018, bringing in a "win" of $953,698,753 to casinos in the state according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

On the South Shore, the $14,938,015 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up 12.61 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,214,172, up 7.08 percent.

UHC cycling team training in South Lake Tahoe before Amgen TOC

The Amgen Tour of California is just a week away, and since both the women's and men's races come through South Lake Tahoe this year, many cyclists can be seen training on area roads.

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.

Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.

USFS approves Heavenly's plans that include widening trails

A project to improve existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort was approved this week by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

Improvements will include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Amgen cyclist Peter Stetina hits the road from South Lake Tahoe to Kirkwood

American professional road cyclist Peter Stetina was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, inviting local cyclists to join him on a training run from Sprouts to Kirkwood, and back.

Daniel Knight of Dayton, Nev., the assistant manager of Save Mart in Carson City came to town to join Stetina. Chadwick Clark of South Lake Tahoe, the chef at Camp Galilee in Glenbrook, also joined in. Both ride their bikes to work when weather allows.

Meet and ride part of Amgen route in Lake Tahoe with pro cyclist Peter Stetina

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Professional road racing cyclist Peter Stetina is in South Lake Tahoe to train for May's Amgen Tour of California and the public is invited to meet him as well as gone on a ride out to Kirkwood on Wednesday, April 18.

From 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Stetina will be at Sprout's Café. At 9:45 a.m., 10:00 a.m at the latest, Stetina will take cyclists on the training route to Luther Pass and Pickett’s Junction, proceeding toward Kirkwood Mountain Resort if time allows (casual pace for first hour; hours 2-3 will be at a fast pace).

Changes ahead for South Shore bus services

One thing is certain, something has to change or there will not be enough money to operate buses around the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. What isn't certain is how those changes will look, where extra funding can come from, or if services will have to be cut.

During Friday's Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) board meeting, options to keep a sustainable transit system in place for Lake Tahoe were discussed. Buses continue to operate at a loss and that cannot continue, according to the TTD staff.

Truckee rock climber falls to his death overnight

A Truckee man died after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff Wednesday night, Placer County sheriff's officials said.

The Placer Search and Rescue and Nordic teams responded when they received a call of a fallen hiker at 10:00 p.m. near Squaw Valley.

The unidentified man was with two friends in the area of Big Chief, just east of Highway 89 and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The men, in their 20s and 30s, did some rock climbing during daylight hours and then went to hike to the top of Big Chief after dark with their headlamps on.

Proposed improvements at Heavenly released

The U.S. Forest Service has released their draft decision for proposed improvements to existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Much of the work will be done on runs outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin boundary.

Those proposed improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Olympic countdown: Anderson and Bowman lead U.S. teams to South Korea

Gold medalists Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson are representing the South Shore once again on the global stage as they head to the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang February 9-25.

Vehicle fatalities decline, pedestrian and cyclist deaths rise on Nevada roads

The Nevada Departments of Transportation and Public Safety are reminding Nevadans to share the road after Nevada pedestrian traffic deaths rose in 2017 amid a decline in overall statewide traffic deaths.

In 2017, Douglas County had a rise in all deaths on the road: Fatal crashes up from 5 to 9, fatalities up from 5 to 11, alcohol fatal crashes up from 1 to 2, and number of fatalities in those crashes up from 1 to 3.

Donations from Vail Resorts CEO and his wife to focus on mental health issues

Mental Health issues in communities where they have operations will be the focus of a new charitable fund created by Vail's Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz and his wife, Elana Amsterdam.

Katz and Amsterdam created the new charitable fund in October 2017 with funding of approximately $58 million.

Monthly gaming figures released: South Shore casinos up over $2M

Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) released their October figures today and they show revenue for casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe were up $2,293,554 over the same month in 2016. That is a 16.19 percent gain.

They showed a gaming "win" of $16,462,763.

The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Heavenly looks to widen some runs and move snowmaking lines

Heavenly Mountain Resort has taken steps to improve their skiing and snowboarding terrain while also adding energy and water efficiency changes.

Improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines, increase energy and water efficiency as they seek to improve safety and maintain native species.

Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.

Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.

Power out to parts of South Lake Tahoe after car hits power pole

Power is out to residents in the Gardner Mountain and Boulder Mountain Court area Saturday morning. Crews from Liberty Utilities have responded and expect to have power restored within the hour.

Complete details are not yet available but early reports say a car hit a power pole. Liberty Utilities responded shortly after 8:00 a.m.

Free bus passes for LTCC students, Ridge Tahoe and Heavenly employees

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) Board of Directors approved several funding agreements with local entities Friday which will provide free rides for several groups including Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) students, employees and guests of the Ridge Tahoe and associated properties, as well as Heavenly Mountain Resort employees.

The agreement between TTD and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) to allow current students with a valid Lake Tahoe Community College identification card to ride all local transit services at no charge during the academic year ending June 30, 2018.

Tahoe-Truckee Electric Vehicle Plan named best in Nevada

At its annual conference Wednesday, the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association recognized the Tahoe-Truckee Plug-In Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan with awards for most outstanding plan and most outstanding public outreach. The awards were presented as part of the group’s annual DeBoer Awards program.

Shore Shore casinos biggest loser in July; Carson Valley casinos on the plus side

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a rough month in July, having their "win" of $23,853,279 down 14.76 percent from figures a year ago. Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville had a "win" of $9,529,716, up eight percent from July of 2016.

As a state, Nevada were down 1.73 percent with a "win" of $997,972,643.

SR28 reopened after boulder on roadway causes injury accident

State Route 28 has reopened this morning after an early morning accident involving a four-foot boulder.

One person was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries after their car was found on its side with the boulder near by. It is unclear at this time if the boulder hit the car as it rolled down or if it was already on the roadway.

The 5:53 a.m. accident took place three miles north of U.S. 50 on August 29.

A downed tree was also found next to the tree and boulder.

Both lanes on State Route 28 were closed for two hours after the crash but have since reopened.

South Shore casinos end fiscal year with "win" up 7 percent

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a gaming "win" of $16,742,788 in June, bringing their fiscal year totals to $223,038,389, 7.37 percent ahead of last year. The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Their June win was an 9.38 percent increase over the same month in 2016.

The South Shore casinos came in second on the percentage of annual wins, beat by downtown Las Vegas casinos, whose fiscal year win was up 10.75 percent.

Barton adds trauma surgeon to their South Lake Tahoe team

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Sandra Taylor, MD, FACS, MS has been added to the team at Barton Health as their third general surgery surgeon. Besides her expertise in general surgery and minimally invasive surgery., Taylor also has experience in trauma life support. As a Level III Trauma Center, Barton Health is equipped to quickly provide specialized, in-depth care for patients in the critical, “golden hour” of trauma.

South Tahoe High swimmers have 10 top ten finishes at State

Another year of swimming for high school is over, and South Tahoe Vikings girls and boys teams are returning from the NIAA State Finals with some medals. Overall, the girls team are seventh in the state, and the boys are sixth. Boulder City High School had huge wins for both teams, coming in first for both boys and girls.

New zip line to go through treetops in South Lake Tahoe this summer

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.

SR28 reopens after boulder removed from roadway

5:41 p.m. update: Nevada Highway Patrol says that NDOT was able to clear the boulder out faster than expected and SR28 is now open.

State Route 28 near Chimney Beach was closed in both directions due to a boulder blocking the roadway.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) the estimated time of reopening is 8:00 p.m.
