SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An explosion and subsequent fire at a South Lake Tahoe home Friday was the result of a butane honey oil (BHO) processing explosion, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Council relaxes rules on outdoor restaurant seating and advertising

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed an urgency ordinance during their special meeting Thursday, one that relaxes the regulations regarding temporary signage, building permit fees, and outdoor restaurant seating rules.

As the City and County move into Governor Newsom's Stage 2 plans, restrictions placed on some places of business to promote social distancing and safety practices will not allow many to reopen in the same manner as pre-pandemic.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Supervisor for Area 5, Sue Novasel, will be holding two virtual Town Hall meetings to discuss vacation home rental (VHR) issues. She will be joined by El Dorado County staff to discuss the rentals in the County portion of the Tahoe Basin.

The first will be held on Wednesday, May 13 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Fire hits South Lake Tahoe home twice in one night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home on Idaho Avenue in South Lake Tahoe had two fires overnight, resulting in damage to both the house and garage.

At 5:52 p.m. February 1, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called out to the home after what appears to be ashes placed in the garage caught on fire. The fire was knocked down and after being cleaned up, the fire crew left.

Emergency personnel respond after car veers into South Lake Tahoe home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 71-year old local man was transported to Barton Hospital for evaluation after he experienced a medical issue while driving on South Shore Drive Monday afternoon. He veered off the road and into the garage of a home.

Emergency personnel responded to the 4:10 p.m. call June 3 and upon arrival found the car had crashed through the garage. Nobody was home at the time but she arrived shortly after.

The South Lake Tahoe building department inspected the structure and damage was limited to the garage.

There were no injuries.

Traffic collision in South Lake Tahoe; Injuries reported

Update May 19 9:00 a.m.: The 65-year-old driver who verred off Lake Tahoe Boulevard on Saturday suffered a medical episode according to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The unidentified South Lake Tahoe man was transported to Barton Hospital with minor injuries from the crash.

Update 1:15 p.m.: One person was transported to the hospital after they left the roadway and ended up hitting two parked cars and a building Saturday morning. The driver was transported with unknown injuries.

City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative reach settlement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An agreement has been reached between the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative (TWC) after over two years of court proceedings between the two.

During the closed session portion of Tuesday's City Council meeting, the four councilmembers allowed to participate voted unanimously to accept the signed agreement between the City and TWC. Councilmember Cody Bass had to recuse himself from voting since he is the owner and president of TWC.

South Lake Tahoe business closes after heavy snow causes partial roof collapse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavy snow on top of the Powder House building in South Lake Tahoe led to a partial roof collapse on Friday morning.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to the business at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and La Salle Avenue and found the main load-bearing beams of the building had failed. The structural damage is on the second floor and there was no apparent damage to the first floor.

The building was evacuated and red-tagged by the building department until repairs can be made. Also in the same building is Maya Grill which has also had to close.

South Lake Tahoe crash sends car into home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Nissan pickup truck ended up in a South Lake Tahoe home on Saturday afternoon after being struck from behind by a Dodge Ram truck.

At 1:30 p.m. on August 25, the driver of the pickup truck was driving on Pioneer Trail when he stopped to turn onto Herbert Avenue. He was struck from behind by the Dodge and passed out. His pickup then freewheeled down Herbert and crashed into a home at the corner of Warr Road and Herbert Avenue.

The driver was transported to Barton Hospital with undisclosed injuries. There were no other injuries.

Winds cause tree to land on top of South Lake Tahoe duplex

High winds caused a tree to fall onto a duplex on Tahoe Vista Drive in South Lake Tahoe, just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 18.

Residents were home in both units and the tree narrowly missed hitting one of the residents according to SLT Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen.

There were no injuries and one of the family's cat was rescued.

A peak wind gust at the South Lake Tahoe airport was measured at 56 mph as of 10:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, with average winds 24-32 mph.

Lake Valley Fire crews respond to Meyers roof collapse

Lake Valley Fire Department (LVFD) crews responded to a roof collapse off of Nahane Street Wednesday morning. The flat roof and deck collapsed over the garage of the Meyers area home had due to a heavy snow load.

A neighbor saw the damage March 22 and called it in, but they are unsure of when the incident actually occurred.

Crews immediately shut off the gas to the property and notified Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and Building Department.

Complete loss after roof collapses on Kingsbury Grade condo

The roof over a South Shore condominium collapsed Friday morning, destroying one of the units and damaging the other.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) responded to the March 10 incident on Kingsbury Grade on the lake side of its intersection with South Benjamin Drive.

"Looks like a total loss as the only thing still standing is garage, but even that ceiling is damaged," said Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall Eric Guevin.

The historic building that housed a liquor store and other businesses in South Lake Tahoe suffered significant damage after a heavy snow load contributed to the collapse of the building's roof early Monday morning.

The vacation home rental (VHR) businesses in South Lake Tahoe have joined together in an effort to address, not only issues residents have with their homes, but to address their relationship with those who control and vote on their regulations.

"Our biggest fear is that the City has changed the intent of the ordinance without the council approval," said Josh Priou, Director of Product Development at Lake Tahoe Accommodations and a member of SLTVRA, South Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Alliance.

South Lake Tahoe fire causes $400,000 in damage

A quick response by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) saved a Merced Avenue four-plex from major damage Wednesday night.

At 10:54 p.m. December 14, SLTFR received a call of fire in one of the four two-story units. When they arrived they found the bottom floor engulfed. Within seven minutes, the fire was knocked down according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

City of SLT wins lawsuit filed by Vacation Home Rental group

A lawsuit against the City of South Lake Tahoe over the fees charged to those who rent out their homes as vacation rentals was won by the City in court this week. The June 23 verdict was received by all parties on June 28.

Judge Steven Bailey of the El Dorado County Superior Court issued an 11-page decision supporting the City's rights to charge fees to recover their costs in administering the VHR ordinance, including staff time for accounting, planning, building department, administration, code enforcement and other costs.

South Lake Tahoe Building Permit Center extends hours

In order to improve customer service, the South Lake Tahoe Permit Center expanded their hours of operations.

Beginning today, August 17, the center will be open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with no closures during the day.

The City recognized the need to provide quality customer service to the development community. The new hours of operation will help assist individuals and businesses who want to invest in the community, improve their buildings, and build new projects by providing more opportunities for permit processing needs.

Disaster Declaration for parts of Douglas County

9:20 p.m. update 7/8/15

Approximately 141 homes have water and structural damage after Wednesday's flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County. It is unknown how many homes may have landscape damage.

No injuries have been reported.

Ordinance protects health and safety of long term motel renters

In order to ensure motels and hotels being used as long term housing were kept decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable, the City of South Lake Tahoe has created a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) ordinance. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the first reading received unanimous approval and support.

The ordinance gives the lodging community guidelines to follow if renting out units more than 30 days.

Safe and habitable units will be made available within the next twelve months once the design and maintenance standards are approved at the next council meeting June 16.

Douglas County's 2014 floods didn't cause enough damage for assistance

Last summer's flash floods in Douglas County caused $927,205 in damage, far below the federal minimum of $3,753,710 needed in order to receive federal assistance.

While Douglas County Emergency Management had requested that due to the close timing of these events (July 20, July 30, Aug. 6 and Aug. 11) the state consider combining all damage under one event, FEMA regulations do not allow for combining damage costs of multiple events.

Late night motel fire in South Lake Tahoe displaces 10 people

Ten people had to find other accommodations Monday night after a suspicious fire started at the Tahoe Pines Lodge and destroyed three units.

The lodge in South Lake Tahoe is located behind the Sno-Flake Drive Inn and is used primarily as a residential motel. The American Red Cross gave the displaced residents rooms at the Howard Johnson Express Inn for three days.

South Lake Tahoe addresses new changes to Americans with Disabilities Act law
