“We know many local families are struggling this year,” said Jill Larson, one of the organizers of TRPA’s holiday drive. “The staff really wanted to help,” she said.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is partnering with Christmas Cheer All Year and St. Theresa’s Catholic Church to collect donations for local families in need this holiday season.

“We are concerned that so many local families are struggling right now,” said Joanne Marchetta, Executive Director for TRPA. “We want to help make sure that no local child goes without warm clothes and that families don’t go hungry this holiday season.”

Movie Review: 'Hugo' is Scorsese at his best and a holiday treat for all

The motion picture "Hugo," now playing at the Horizon Stadium Cinemas at South Shore Lake Tahoe in Stateline, is a holiday movie that kids and adults can enjoy. It's Martin Scorsese's homage to film pioneer Georges Méliès, a French innovator who created much of the library of movie techniques back before World War I only to be forgotten amid the strife on combat in France. His films were largely destroyed to make such things as guitar picks.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort to open Friday

Kirkwood Mountain Resort announced it will open Friday, Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving, and remain open through the weekend, and then again from Friday, Dec. 2 to Dec. 4. Kirkwood says it will use midweek operations for on mountain preparation, snow making and readying more terrain. The resort hopes to open for full seven-day-a-week winter operations beginning Friday, Dec. 9. The date may change, however, with significant snowfall.

Scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno helped renowned environmental artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison create an exhibition on display at the Nevada Museum of Art in downtown Reno that predicts the potential effects of climate change on the Sierra Nevada mountains.

“The exhibition by the Harrisons helps people see how climate change may alter natural areas that many of us enjoy,” Thomas Albright, professor of geography in the University’s College of Science, said.

Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students.
