South Lake Tahoe Welcomes First Baby Born in 2014

Joshua Tapia-Hernandez arrived a day late, giving him the honors of being the first baby born in 2014 at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

His parents are Adriana and Abraham Tapia of South Lake Tahoe and came into the world at six pounds, fourteen ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

Joshua was born at 5:24pm on Thursday. When mother Adriana arrived at the hospital in the early afternoon, she was very calm. She said her calmness even amazed her physician, Dr. Spielvogel, who was surprised how quickly the baby was born.

Search Continues for Carson Valley Teen Runaway

Douglas County Sheriff's Office is continuing their investigation into the October 6th disappearance of 17 year old Treasa Ramirez from the Rite of Passage in Minden, Nevada.

Ramirez, originally from Winnemucca, was a resident of ROP and apparently left the facility on foot. A bag of clothing apparently worn by the teen when she was last seen in her bedroom was found nearby.

It was originally thought that she was trying to make it back to Winnemucca but she has yet to return. Investigators believe she may be in the Reno/Spark area.

A Time of Giving: The South Lake Tahoe Community Helps Others Through Christmas Cheer

You've most likely seen the bins around town, covered in wrapping paper and notes asking for toy donations for Christmas Cheer. The call for toys being needed for children in the South Lake Tahoe community went out, and the community responded.

South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial Tree Decorated for the Season

It appears that Santa's elves were busy at the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial this week. The memorial, located on the corner of Highway 50 and Wildwood Avenue, got a holiday makeover. Not only was the area decorated for the Christmas but there was a stocking placed at the site in memory for each local child who is memorialized there.

Organizers don't want any child to ever be forgotten nor do they want them to be without their own Christmas stocking for a little something from Santa.

National Search on for Missing Carson Valley Children

The search is on for Kathryn Ann Moore, 44 and her two children Patricia Read, 5, and William Moore, 2, after Moore failed to return the children to their father Richard Read of Gardnerville, NV.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Moore was to be in court to exchange the children with Read on November 21. Attempts to contact Kathryn have been unsuccessful and a recent visit to her home has indicated that she has left with the children.

Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority’s Drive and Drop for Christmas Cheer

South Lake Tahoe residents in need will be the beneficiaries of the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority Drive By Food & Toy Drive being held this week.

Bins for Christmas Cheer will be available in front of the LTVA California location at 3066 Highway 50 across from Rojo's and Snowflake Drive-In through December 14 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Christmas Cheer feeds over 400 families regularly, all year long, and the need for wholesome meals is even more important to those with children who are out of school at the holidays. For more information call 530-541-5255

Actors of All Ages Wanted For Upcoming Play at LTCC

How does a community deal with and recover from a tragedy that shocked the entire world? This November, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department will explore that question in its production of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” by Moisés Kaufman, Stephen Belber, Leigh Fondakowski, and Greg Pierotti. The play seeks to understand a town that is forced to cope with the aftermath of a brutal hate crime, while also facing their own biases and fears under the media spotlight.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

South Lake Tahoe Takes Part in National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week

October 20-26 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the City of South Lake Tahoe is joining agencies across the country to help bring awareness to the public about the harms of lead.

This year’s theme is "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future” which emphasizes the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects.

Deadly Shooting at Sparks Middle School

11:00 am update: Sparks Police confirm that a Sparks Middle School staff member and the student gunman are the two dead from this morning's schoolyard shooting and that two minors are in critical condition at Renown Medical Center. The school will be closed for the remainder of the week. More details will be released as the investigation continues.

Four were shot this morning at Sparks Middle School, resulting in 2 deaths and 2 being treated at Renown Medical Center. Many details are not being confirmed at this time.

A Farewell to Local Firefighter Mitch Underhill

The South Lake Tahoe community said their goodbyes today to Lake Valley Firefighter Paramedic Mitch Underhill, both from the streets bordering his procession into town from Lake Valley to those inside the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. The 34 year old South Lake Tahoe native unexpectedly passed away on September 29.

Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.

Friends of the Library Looking for Book Donations For November 16 Sale

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

South Tahoe Middle School Students Treated to Shopping Spree

It took several cashiers and 3 check out lines to process the carts full of clothing, coats and shoes that 120 South Tahoe Middle School students spent the day shopping for at Kmart. On Saturday, October 5. The Assistance League® of Sierra Foothills (ALSF) partnered with the South Lake Tahoe Kmart to bring the Operation School Bell® program to the students.

LTCC Mourns Unexpected Death of Tahoe Firefighter, Former Instructor

Lake Tahoe Community College joins the Lake Valley Fire Protection District in mourning the unexpected loss of firefighter paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill. The 34-year-old, known as Mitch, died Sunday, September 29th.

Underhill has been an instructor at LTCC as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy since 2009. He joined the Lake Valley Fire District in 2005, and served the community for just over 8 years in that capacity. He is survived by his wife, two young children, his parents, and his brother and sister.

23rd Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run to Benefit Christmas Cheer

Fire Fest 2013

The Annual South Lake Tahoe Basin FireFest brought out crowds of all ages to the airport on Saturday, September 28.

This free event that highlighted fire and life safety for children and families. Helicopters, fire trucks, the bomb robot and dozens of fire fighting and emergency personnel were on hand to provide demonstrations as well as the popular hands-on features of the smoke house and squirting fire hoses. Smokey the Bear and Sparky the fire dog were also there to greet the kids.

Lead is highly toxic and can harm your child’s brain, causing lifelong learning and behavior problems. Children under age six are most at risk for lead poisoning, but there are also significant health risks for adults, newborns and pregnant women too.

Lead dust in the home is caused by chipping, peeling, flaking or deteriorating lead-based paint. Lead dust is not the same as household dust. Lead dust is often invisible, heavier, and stickier. It can be present in even the cleanest of homes.

Inaugural Lake Tahoe Color Themed 5k Run a "Blast"

Bursts of color surrounded the over 100 runners as they participated in the inaugural Tahoe Youth and Family Service's Color Blast Run on Saturday, September 14. The 5k course meandered through the Lake Tahoe Community College parking lot, streets and bike paths. The race name comes from colored cornstarch that is doused over the runners and they pass by strategically placed stations along the course. Once the runners came across the finish line there was a celebration of dancing and lots more color being tossed.

Low-Cost Community Flu Clinics Announced in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division will begin conducting low-cost community flu vaccination clinics in South Lake Tahoe starting September 25.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe appoints Fernando Vargas as executive director

Fernando Vargas, a 25-year veteran of Boys & Girls Clubs, has been appointed Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Tahoe.

Vargas, 54, brings extensive experience from Clubs throughout the country, most recently in Elko, Nev., to the position. His successful background with fundraising, fiscal management, strategic and youth development initiatives were cited by Jeff Tillman, Club President, as major reasons for his appointment.

Tour de Tahoe Success for South Tahoe High Sophomore

South Lake Tahoe teen Mykala Muskovitz completed Sunday's Tour de Tahoe's 72 mile course around Lake Tahoe in just 4.5 hours. While some riders were faster, Mykala's ride was filled with passion and compassion as she rode to raise money to sponsor under privileged dancers at Lake Tahoe's Shining Stars and to buy winter hats and gloves for the children at Live Violence Free.
