Ohio voters soundly reject marijuana legalization initiative

Ohio voters soundly rejected a marijuana initiative Tuesday that would have legalized recreational and medicinal use of the drug, and would have limited commercial growing to a small group of investors who drafted and promoted the measure.
The initiative was failing 65% to 35%, with nearly 90% of precincts reporting.
“Issue 3 has been soundly defeated!” Ohioans Against Marijuana Monopolies crowed on Twitter. “No marijuana monopolies in this state!”

NDOT wants people to report illicit drainage and discharge into roads

The Nevada Department of Transportation is urging residents to help protect water quality by preventing and reporting illicit drainage and discharge onto state roads and transportation facilities.
Illicit discharge is anything entering a roadway drainage system that is not natural stormwater. Pesticides, construction dirt or materials, as well as materials from neighboring properties and roadway runoff containing fertilizers, vehicle oil and chemicals are examples.

Over the past three years, a new master plan for the South Lake Tahoe airport has been in the creation process, from the awarding of a $315,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2012 to community outreach to Tuesday's presentation on a final design plan.

15-year-long partnership keeps Tahoe Yellow Cress off endangered species list

Successful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide today that Tahoe yellow cress (Rorippa subumbellata), a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Two million dollars worth of cannabis confiscated in drug bust

A five month long investigation into the Highlands Health and Wellness marijuana dispensary in Shingle Springs uncovered what authorities say was a multi-million dollar criminal operation.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) centered their investigation on tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy and the commercial distribution of marijuana for profit.

Plan unveiled for old Factory Stores at the Y location

"The Factory Stores at the Y" will soon be transformed into "The Crossing at Tahoe Valley" if the plan is approved by the City of South Lake Tahoe. In January, 2015, The Sutter Capital Group of Sacramento announced they had purchased the property after it fell into bankruptcy.
South Shore projects win TRPA's Best in Basin Awards

Several South Lake Tahoe projects were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) as being the "Best in the Basin" for demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.
The projects that were recognized upgraded highways, built new bike trails, improved water quality, restored environmentally-sensitive areas, remodeled blighted commercial buildings, and created defensible space for better wildfire protection.

In November, 2014, 60% of the voters in California approved Proposition 47, the "Safe Neighborhoods and School Act."
Since then, South Lake Tahoe and other cities across the state are seeing a big increase in crime. Prop. 47 reduced the penalties for certain theft and drug crimes in California. Several crimes that were once a felony because a misdemeanor overnight.
TRPA gives City of South Lake Tahoe more control over building permits

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has entered into a new partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe to streamline the permit process in city limits.
When the Tahoe Valley Area and Tourist Core Plans were approved, it opened the door for a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so city staff can carry out TRPA's environmental review.
"The TRPA wants the community to thrive," said John Hitchcock, Planning Manager for the City. "They are comfortable with us taking the lead on projects."
The new MOU went into affect on Monday, September 14, 2015.

Herbicides may be used on invasive species in Tahoe Keys

The underwater scenes could be straight out of "Creature of the Black Lagoon." Long feathery tendrils of green plants, growing at alarming rates in the Tahoe Keys and attracting fish not before known in the crystal blue waters of the lake.
The plant described here is better known as the Eurasian Watermilfoil. It is joined by another nuisance non-native plant, the curlyleaf pondweed, in creating problems in the waters of the Tahoe Keys.

South Lake Tahoe U-Haul planning big improvements

U-Haul is making changes at its South Lake Tahoe location and they are challenging their neighbors to help make the entrance to the community a more visually pleasing one.

After years of planing and months of public input, the new Airport Master Plan for South Lake Tahoe was presented to the community on Tuesday. About a dozen people attended to see and hear what the final plan might look like.
Since buying the Tahoe Valley Airport from El Dorado County in 1983 for $1, the City of South Lake Tahoe has been supporting its operation which at one time saw almost 300,000 people a year pass through.
Car thefts in South Lake Tahoe rose in 2013, leveled off in 2014

In the State of California, vehicle thefts dropped 7% in 2014, marking the second straight year of decline.
For South Lake Tahoe, it was the first year of decline in three years.
In 2013, vehicle thefts in the city limits jumped 46% from 37 stolen cars to 54. Following in 2014, there was a drop of 7% when 50 cars were stolen according to figures obtained by South Tahoe Now from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
To date, 2015 is looking to be a repeat of last year with 25 car thefts through June.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has announced a fourth and final public meeting about the newly released Airport Master Plan - Draft Phase 2 report on Tuesday, June 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will be held at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
The City initiated this Airport Master Plan Update in 2013, with funding support from the FAA, in order to determine the current and future potential of the Airport. The recommended development will be presented in three planning periods; short-term (2015 to 2019), intermediate term (2020 to 2024), and long-term (2025 to 2034).
Time running out to relocate historic Barton Ranch Complex

Unless someone comes forward with the manpower, location and money needed to relocate the historic Barton Ranch Complex at the "Y", it will be torn down. Barton family members were granted the approval for demolition during Monday's Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) special hearings officer meeting.
The public has 21 days to file an appeal to the decision or the TRPA can approve the demolition.
Plays, comedy and music fill Valhalla summer schedule

As one can imagine, Donielle Morse has been very busy lately. As the Water Conservationist specialist for the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Morse spends her days informing, teaching and keeping up on the new state water mandates.
Drought or no drought, water conservation is necessary and its the reason South Lake Tahoe is faring better than most communities in the West. Since 2007, local water users have cut back 27% of their annual water usage.

Renting a vacation home is being increasingly popular in South Lake Tahoe just as in other communities. Many tourists prefer to rent a VHR instead of a traditional motel or hotel room. There are many reasons from enjoying time with family to reunions and wedding parties.

California took the first step June 5 to regulate its nearly 20-year-old medical marijuana industry, one that lawmakers said currently resembles something out of the “wild, wild West.”
AB266 merges what were two competing bills and attempts to set up state regulations that will pass muster with the federal Department of Justice. The owners of Heavenly Village Cinemas want to turn an empty third floor space on the property into a restaurant and bar with an entertainment venue with stadium style seating for 110 people. Tahoe Production House is holding an open casting call for a commercial they will be filming in South Lake Tahoe June 15 to 25, 2105.
They need someone to play the role of a female runner who will be running in shorts, wearing a sports bra, thin shirt and a small backpack. The person hired must also be willing to jump into water for the final shot.
The production company needs a headshot and video resume of your running no later than June 10, 2015.
