Community partners bring "Farm-to-School" program to South Lake Tahoe schools

October is National Farm to School Month, and in South Lake Tahoe, the UC Cooperative Extension CalFresh nutrition education program has partnered with Barton Health and Lake Tahoe Unified School District to implement Harvest of the Month, a statewide initiative that motivates students to make healthier choices and brings fresh, in season produce to all South Lake Tahoe elementary schools.
Parent involvement and new focus key to WASC accreditation at South Tahoe High
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/28/2018 - 4:13pmWhen the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) didn't give South Tahoe High the results on their accreditation they wanted in 2016, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and high school staff set on a path to change those results in 2018.
The high school was given a two-year probationary accreditation instead of the desired six year accreditation and they will be reevaluated this March when a new WASC team returns to South Tahoe High School (STHS).

$475,000 awarded to 118 South Tahoe High seniors

The annual Senior Awards Night saw 118 students recognized with $475,000 in scholarships. During the evening, 64 individual presentations honored one or more students for achievements.
New STHS principal introduced as Chad Houck prepares for new job
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/24/2017 - 3:57pmFriday will be the last day on the job at South Tahoe High School (STHS) for Principal Chad Houck. He, his wife and five children are headed to Ridgecrest where he'll be the Dean of Instruction for Cerro Coso Community College starting June 5.
New principal selected for South Tahoe High
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/17/2017 - 8:19amCarline Sinkler has been selected as the new principal of South Tahoe High School and the community is invited to meet her at the LTUSD District Office on Tuesday, May 23 at 5:00 p.m.
Sinkler comes from the San Francisco Unified School District where she has served as the principal of Herbert Hoover Middle School since 2013.
She was selected by the interview committee with "overwhelming enthusiasm" according to Shannon Chandler, the district's public information officer.
LTUSD has WASC plans and updates for South Tahoe High on website
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/15/2017 - 4:56pmThe Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) didn't give South Tahoe High and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) the results expected after a WASC accreditation team visited South Lake Tahoe in the Spring of 2016.
Instead of an expected six-year term they received a two-year accreditation which goes through June of 2018. On March 19 and 20 of that year a team of educators will return to the campus and evaluate recommended changes.
Sierra House Elementary raising funds for Charlie Cart Project

South Tahoe High well on way to keeping accreditation

That was the message given during Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees as staff updated them on their ongoing efforts to hit the targets set for the next visit by Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in March of 2018.
Several parents have voiced their concerns that students aren't getting in the colleges of their choice due to the school's status.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board formally accepted the resignation of Chad Houck, the principal of South Tahoe High during their Tuesday night meeting, though word of the upcoming change in leadership had been circulating for weeks.
"Chad will be seeking other opportunities," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater.
The popular principal has received a lot of support from parents, the community and staff.

Following decades of desegregation efforts and forced busing, lawsuits in the 1990s effectively brought a halt to desegregation efforts in the country. Neighborhood schools in South Lake Tahoe may have been segregated, not only based on race, but based on income levels.

The Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District Boards of Trustees will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, March 24.
During the meeting, two people from the Los Rios Community College will provide an overview of "Get Focused, Stay Focused!" a career and educational course that LTUSD officials hope to bring to South Tahoe High next year.
South Tahoe High Principal Promoted to LTUSD Assistant Superintendent
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/23/2014 - 3:09pmIvonne Larson, the Principal of South Tahoe High, was named Assistant Superintendent by the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board on Tuesday, April 22. She will be in charge of Secondary Education, Career Technical Education and AVID for the district starting July 1, 2014.
This is the first time LTUSD has had an Assistant Superintendent since Barbara Davis resigned in August of 2005. The new position for Assistant Superintendent is part time.
The District will post a job opening for STHS Principal this week to replace Larson.
