Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/19/2020 - 10:29pmUPDATE 11/20 11:30AM: On the night of November 15, 2020, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a domestic violence incident in the 1200 block of Sierra Boulevard. A woman had been bettered after her boyfriend returned to their apartment after being at a local bar, allegedly throwing her around by her throat. The boyfriend, Brandon Bannowsky, then allegedly stole the victim's car and fled.
South Lake Tahoe among first to receive homeless housing funds

The community was one of seven California cities and counties to receive the first wave of Project Homekey grants totaling $76.5 million.
New fire chief selected for South Lake Tahoe

Clive Savacool, the former chief of the Garden Valley Fire Protection District, will be taking the helm at South Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, a position vacated when Jeff Meston retired in February 2019.
Interim city manager selected for South Lake Tahoe

During closed session they approved the hiring of Brad Kilger who brings with him years of experience to the position.
Kilger has over 40 years of professional municipal government experience.
South Lake Tahoe bank robber faces long prison term after pleading guilty to 19 robberies

Duane Kurt Makela, 50, pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco Thursday to ten armed bank robberies, seven unarmed bank robberies, and two attempted bank robberies.

State schools chief visits California's smallest district - Alpine County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/25/2018 - 11:49pmCalifornia's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.
In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.
SAR volunteers aid in search of Bay Area man missing in Yosemite

Oakland resident Alan Chow, 36, had his backpacking gear and wilderness permit when he set out on a solo hike Saturday, February 17 on the loop trail in Yosemite's northern wilderness area above Hetch Hetchy, about a mile from O'Shaughnessy Dam.
He became disoriented and lost his way.
Suspected car thief leads police on chase from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/05/2018 - 9:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) attempted to pull over a vehicle in Carson City Thursday night, but the driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase until the car crashed in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore, over 35 miles away.
NHP followed the car up Spooner Summit on Highway 50 to Stateline. Per protocol they won't engage in high speed chases so followed him until he approached Stateline. Troopers called ahead to South Lake Tahoe, advising police that the vehicle was headed in their direction.

Julie Pardysz was relocating to Colorado and had the business up for sale. The Tot Spot was on the verge of having to close as no buyers were coming forward. At the last minute, Jen and Chris Bloch made an offer to keep the doors open.
FBI affidavit alleges man found hiding out in South Lake Tahoe confessed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/04/2015 - 2:34pmA Sacramento County man accused of kidnapping a Vallejo woman in March allegedly confessed to the crime in a recorded jailhouse interview and said he did it alone, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.
Matthew Muller, 38, of Orangevale, is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach.

Thousands of people lined the streets of the state capitol to honor Howell who was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, August 15, 2015.
"Superheros are not always in comic books, they do exist in real life," said the fallen hero's father, Kevin Howell, at his son's funeral.
Memorial Paddle Out to be held in deputy's honor at El Dorado Beach
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/19/2015 - 11:40amIn honor of Contra Costa County Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Francies, the man who lost his life while trying to save another person in the water at El Dorado Beach, South Tahoe Standup Paddle will be holding a Memorial Paddle-Out on Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of the normal Wednesday night SUP series, the paddling community will be holding the paddle-out but those that want to stay on the shore are welcome to participate as well.
Meet at El Dorado Beach or on the water at 6:30 p.m.
Marijuana grow houses becoming a problem in South Lake Tahoe

In the city limits, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler estimates there are 300 houses where marijuana is growing illegally with another 200 in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore according to SLEDNET’s Matt Underhill. (SLEDNET stands for South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team, a joint drug enforcement task force)
