Historian Michael E. Fischer will speak on Baby Face Nelson in Nevada in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 13, at 10:00 am.

Few people living in Nevada today know that Baby Face Nelson, whose given name was Lester Gillis, spent a great deal of time in Nevada. He was avoiding the heat from authorities in the Midwest. In Reno, he was afforded protection from arrest and incarceration because of his connections to Bill Graham and James McKay. Their political and business connections covered almost the entire state.

Recall effort against Sue Novasel and Brian Veerkamp fails

EL Dorado County Total Recall, the group behind the recall of all five County Supervisors, failed to turn in any of the signatures needed to bring the recall of Supervisors Sue Novasel and Brian Veerkamp to the voters in November.

On October 27, 2015, Sue Novasel, the County Supervisor representing South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma and Pollock Pines was served a “notice of intent to circulate a recall petition” by a group of citizens who said they are “tired of the corruption and cronyism that has plagued our county for years.” It wasn’t only Novasel, but all five of the County Supervisors, Shiva Frentzen, Ron Mikulaco, Michael Ranalli and Brian Veerkamp.

Group calls for recall of all five El Dorado County Supervisors

Efforts to recall the five El Dorado County Supervisors were initiated at the Board's regular meeting on Tuesday, October 27 in Placerville. Sue Novasel and Michael Ranalli were served with "Notices of Intention to Circulate Recall Petitions" by local State of Jefferson organizer, Kevin McAllister.

Supervisor Brian Veerkamp was not at the Board meeting and will be served with his Notice upon his return according to the website, Save Our County. They also said the the goal is to recall all five Supervisors, including Supervisors Shiva Frentzen and Ron Mikulaco.

Michael S. Green, a leading Nevada historian, provides a detailed survey of the Silver State’s past, from the arrival of the early European explorers, to the predominance of mining in the 1800s, to the rise of world-class tourism in the twentieth century, and more recent attempts to diversify the economy.

Alfred J.R. Villalobos, a former state pension fund board member who faced trial next month on federal corruption and bribery charges, has committed suicide, officials said Wednesday.

The Reno Police Department confirmed that Villalobos' death was a suicide, but the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office declined to provide further details because of an ongoing investigation.
