Barton Health will be hosting a virtual speaker panel on student health during COVID-19 on Thursday, October 8 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The free community wellness webinar is to help educate parents on the current COVID-19 protocols for schools and daycare centers, and share tips for student wellbeing during the pandemic.

South Lake Tahoe SWAT operation leads to arrest of local man
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/05/2020 - 9:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Several people in the Bijou neighborhood saw and heard something on Thursday they normally aren't a witness to. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams were called out to an apartment on Spruce Avenue to arrest a suspect with a known violent history and a history with weapons, according to police.
They were there to arrest 45-year-old Edgar Bringas Zavala, a suspect in a domestic violence and terrorist threat case from the night before.
LTCC expands child care to evening hours to help student parents

A recent move by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is helping remove that barrier by having extended hours on Monday and Tuesday evenings so parents who are LTCC students can attend classes and/or study.

A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.
Sierra House Elementary not opening on the first day of school August 26

South Tahoe Now had spoken to the school district on Wednesday and at that time they were still hoping to have the school open by August 26.
Teachers fill LTUSD board room to ask for pay increases
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/19/2019 - 11:05amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dozens of school teachers in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) filled the board room in South Lake Tahoe last Tuesday to show trustees they want a cost of living increase to their pay.
Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.

It has been months of expert testimony, community input, committee meetings, and almost two dozen public meetings that led to Monday’s approval of two new cannabis ordinances.
“You have done a remarkable job,” said local resident Oliver Starr on the Council’s sorting out what will be best for the community. Starr said they created an ordinance that is clean, safe and reputable.
South Lake Tahoe daycare staff member arrested on child sexual assault charges
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/20/2018 - 7:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After an investigation into an allegation of ongoing child sexual assault at a South Lake Tahoe daycare center, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) have arrested the father of the operator of Pequeños Rascals Daycare.
On June 15, SLTPD first received information about the possible assault occurring at the center located at 3336 Sandy Way. Multiple victims came forward and reported a pattern of abuse dating back at least two years.

Boys & Girls Club proposes idea of new home to LTUSD
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/15/2017 - 12:57amWhat is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.
Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.
New South Lake Tahoe daycare center opens up for infants to age 13

Filling a big need on the South Shore, the owners are offering quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children up to age 13.
It's not just babysitting either. It's care with a heavy emphasis on education, music, art, physical activity and family.
The public is invited to see for themselves when Pequeños holds an open house on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 5:00 p.m. They are located at 3336 Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe.
Maria Barrows-Crist 1952 - 2017
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/01/2017 - 6:37pmThe South Lake Tahoe community has lost someone who touched many lives, especially the over 6,700 young ones she cared for through her day care center, Kindertown.
Maria Rose Barrows-Crist was born January 18, 1952 and died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 22, 2017. She died peacefully in her sleep.
Recently retired, she was busy spending time and traveling with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.

Shingle Springs daycare owner faces child endangerment and drug charges
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/08/2015 - 9:49pmThe owner of Country Baby Daycare in Shingle Springs was arrested on Tuesday after officers found her displaying the signs and symptoms of being under the influence of a central nervous stimulant.
Brigitte McAdams, 63, was the sole adult at the center when El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the business which is inside her home. They asked her how many kids were in the home, and, according to deputies, she was unable to account for them. McAdams originally told them seven, but they found just five.

Heavenly closes California side a week ahead of schedule; rest of mountain to close April 19
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 9:45pmA lack of snow is causing Heavenly Mountain Resort to close down their California operations starting Monday, March 30, a week ahead of schedule.
The only access to the mountain for skiing and riding will be from Stagecoach Express until April 5, and from the Gondola until the end of the season.
The resort will operate 11 lifts, accessing 27 trails. Mountain Operations staff will continue to closely monitor and assess conditions daily. At this time the resort is still planning on closing on April 19.
