SROs on campus in South Lake Tahoe: More than a police officer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - School Resource Officers, or SROs, have been a recent topic of conversations in the community with some residents questioning the need for an armed officer on South Lake Tahoe campuses.

The word "resource" gives one an insight into their position - a resource for the students, and not only at school. A resource for the parents. A resource for the school district. A resource for the school.

And the job doesn't end there.

Here are some safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe, healthy, and out of harm’s way.

Focus on Balance
More than a third of adults over age 65 fall each year. Injuries from falls can lead to broken bones, bleeding, and even death.
What can you do?

Tips to avoid tendon strain

As we gear up for outdoor winter activities, the potential for sports-related injuries stacks up. Tendonitis is a common winter sports injury. Here are some facts about this condition and different ways to prevent it.

Tendons are bands of fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to the bones. Micro tears in the tendon can lead to irritation and inflammation known as tendonitis. If the area is not well rested or treated, the tendon starts to degenerate and can turn into unhealthy scar tissue that does not perform or move well.

Tragedy at a Community College—what are we doing here?

Like many Americans, law enforcement folks have been deeply moved by the horrific images we have seen in Oregon. A certain feeling of helplessness has become the norm when we look at these events from the prevention perspective. We may ask questions like:

“Why do people who would do such a thing have access to a gun?”
“Why didn’t people who knew the shooter do something to stop him before people died?”

America's first carbon-neutral gym at Lake Tahoe takes green to the next level

Event Date:
June 30, 2012 - 8:00am

Although they are still an unfortunate rarity, more green gyms are popping up in the United States. They are considered green because their carbon footprint is much lower than the typical huge box gym packed with walls of televisions, rows of cardio equipment (which also have a whole additional slew of TVs), and thousands of tons of carbon-unfriendly stationary equipment. These green gyms tend to be smaller, with the primary carbon footprint generating from their electric usage. Just one treadmill can use anywhere from 500 watts to 1 kilowatt per hour while in use.
