South Lake Tahoe forecast: Possible rain/snow on Tuesday and weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a break between storms with a quiet weather pattern in place over the next couple of days, though the potential for morning fog remains at the beginning of the week. A weak weather system could bring light snow showers to the mountains from late Tuesday into Wednesday with a return of another atmospheric river system with high snow levels that could arrive by Friday.

Snow blankets Lake Tahoe after wet storm passes through

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road controls are dropping on many of the Sierra's highways as the latest of storms passes through. Rain prevailed for much of the weekend, but not before ski resorts received a foot of new snow.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 12" of new snow, Sierra-at-Tahoe 14", Kirkwood 12" and Squaw Valley 16" in the last 24 hours. The West Slope experienced an afternoon and evening of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and fog. Lake Tahoe is forecast to receive some of that freezing fog on Sunday night.

Chain controls on Sierra roads; slick conditions causing travel issues

Tow trucks are being kept busy tonight as many drivers are finding difficulty navigating roads around Lake Tahoe. There are currently areas of freezing fog and heavy snow, with whiteouts on some higher elevations roads. With this being a holiday weekend, expect more traffic than normal.

Warming temps for South Lake Tahoe

Clear skies and light winds are expected through the coming week as a ridge of high pressure along the west coast gradually strengthens, leading a slow warming trend.

Aside from some freezing fog near Truckee and the Sierra Valley, benign conditions remain on tap for the near future as that high pressures continues to build. According to some modules, there is the potential for cooler and wetter weather toward the end of the first week of October, but in the meantime its dry with above normal temperatures by the weekend.

South Lake Tahoe ski, snowboard and weather report for Sunday

The following is the ski, snowboard and weather report for Sunday, January 10, 2016 for South Lake Tahoe brought to you by Lake Tahoe SkiBum.

Winter wonderland at Heavenly Mountain Resort

The word of the day: Pogonip.

That is what gave the top of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort the look of winter and fresh snow on Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a cloud deck around 8,000-9,000 feet was in place most of the night and the supercooled liquid droplets froze on the branches becoming a thick coating of frost.

Here is the definition of "pogonip" from Wikipedia:

Fog settles in Lake Tahoe and nearby valleys through the morning

Recent rainfall and clearing skies may allow areas of fog to develop across the Lake Tahoe Basin, northeast California and western Nevada through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.

Winter storm could bring additional 2 feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra region

With a much stronger storm system approaching tonight, expect slick roads with freezing fog this morning for the Lake Tahoe Basin and down into the valleys, according to the National Weather Service.
Chains and snow tires are required along mountain roads throughout the basin and over mountain passes.
