Recent rainfall and clearing skies may allow areas of fog to develop across the Lake Tahoe Basin, northeast California and western Nevada through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.
Areas of fog could impact travel along the following routes:
— Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe and Carson City to Fallon
—Highway 89 from Hope Valley through the Lake Tahoe Basin and into Plumas County
— Highway 395 from Minden northward to Susanville including Washoe Valley between Reno and Carson City
— Interstate 80 near Truckee and Reno to Winnemucca
— Highway 95 from Lovelock to Fallon
— Alternate Highway 95 in Lyon County
— Highways 49 and 70 in the Sierra Valley
— Highways 36, 44 and 139 in Lassen County
In addition to low visibility, freezing temperatures in the Northern Sierra and northeast California may allow for freezing fog to develop with water on untreated roads freezing into black ice, the weather service reports.
Motorists should allow additional travel time. when driving through fog use low beam headlights, reduce your driving speed and allow extra room between you and other vehicles.
