Is a bear invasion in Lake Tahoe's near future?

Is a bear invasion in Lake Tahoe's near future?

If you listen to veteran Bear League director Ann Bryant, you might want to start taking some serious precautions if you have a place in the Tahoe area.

"We are expecting not only the town bears around Tahoe, but the backwoods bears to start heading in this summer, in record numbers," Bryant said.

The reason: four years of drought have taken their toll on the bears' natural food source. Bryant said she's seeing a warm and relatively snow-free spring that is bringing bears out of hibernation early.

There are an estimated 500 unpermitted, illegal marijuana grow houses on the South Shore according to local law enforcement. Metal, cement, dirt and trash filling up South Lake Tahoe's refuse center

It's the sign of a busy construction season in South Lake Tahoe: an overflowing dump. Even though exact numbers aren't yet available, the South Tahoe Refuse (STR) has seen more trash coming through this summer than in years past and crews cannot keep up with all of the extra garbage.

Since the refuse center recycles about 60% of what comes through it's gates, staff is kept busy sorting through the all the garbage and unwanted items that come in.

Opinion: Plastic bag ban or not, it's up to us to do the right thing

The City of South Lake Tahoe imposed a single use, plastic bag ban for grocery stores in the city limits in October of 2013. The original ordinance was for grocery stores to implement the new policy on January 15, 2014 and for all other retail outlets to begin on October 15. During the June 17th City Council meeting, three Council members decided that the ban on all other retail outlets should be postponed and the final vote on that will be during this week's Council meeting.

Proper Food Storage at Lake Tahoe Campgrounds Make Soon Be Required

Due to the rise in human - bear conflicts at Lake Tahoe campgrounds, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service (LTBMU) has proposed an order to require visitors to properly store food and refuse in a container designed to prevent access by black bears and other wildlife.

Bears quickly learn to expect to find food at previously successful locations and have altered their behaviors in response to human sources of food. Bears habituated to human food will also forage preferentially on human food, even when wildland food is available.

Buddy the bear

Hi. I’m Buddy the bear. I guess that’s my name because I hear people calling me that. “Hey Buddy get out of here.” Or “There’s that bear, Bud get out of here. Maybe my name is Get out of here. I live in the neighborhood at South Lake Tahoe. I have lived here a long time. I like it because the people are good to me. They put food in the garage for me. I get the big bags out, doesn’t have a good smell. Kind of like the dried grass in the field. Some time I share it with some noisy four legged animals. I see the people give them food first and then they put it back in the garage for me to take.

Lake Tahoe problem bears this year have been 'mixed bag'

Biologists anticipating serious problems with black bears raiding garbage and breaking into homes due to lack of food because of drought say the situation has been slow to develop at Lake Tahoe and along the Sierra front but that activity is now picking up in some areas.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife has received about 120 bear complaints thus far in 2012, according to bear biologist Carl Lackey.
While the year is shaping up to be a bit busier than 2011, it’s nothing compared to what Lackey originally expected in the wake of a remarkably dry winter.
