Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso Wins 4th Olympic Medal; Takes the Bronze in Sochi

Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso produced a true champion performance Monday, becoming the first American skier in history to win a medal in three straight Olympic Winter Games with her bronze in a tricky super combined event at the Rosa Khutor alpine center.

Mancuso skied into the lead in the downhill portion and then ripped up the slalom course that bumped nine skiers off course, finishing third behind gold winner German Maria Hoefl-Riesch and silver winner Austrian Nicole Hosp.

Fundraiser Being Held for Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick

Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick has been battling Guillain Barre Syndrome since becoming ill while fighting a wild land fire in Elko, Nevada in June. He has been hospitalized since.

An evening of fundraising to help Kyle in his fight of the disease is being held on Friday, December 6 at Himmel Haus Restaurant and Bar in South Lake Tahoe. There will be a German dinner of Bratwurst and Spaetzel, drinks and live music as well as a silent auction. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The doors will open at 5 pm with the dinner at 6 pm.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial Fundraiser to celebrate the life of former South Lake Tahoe resident and Heavenly Freestyle Team member, Eric Nageotte-Lowe this Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5pm to 8pm at the Himmel Haus, 2819 Saddle Rd. across from Heavenly Mountain’s California base area.

“While Eric was a great skier,” said his coach Jere Crawford, “he was an even better person.”

Jill Kinmont Boothe, whose story was the basis of 'The Other Side of the Mountain' dies

Jill Kinmont Boothe, the former ski champion and Olympic hopeful who was left paralyzed after a skiing accident in Utah in 1955 and whose life story was the subject of the film "The Other Side of the Mountain" and a subsequent sequel, died Thursday at Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City, the Los Angeles Times reports. She was 75.
Ruth Rhines, senior deputy coroner of Carson City, confirmed that Boothe died. A cause of death wasn't given and Rhines could not confirm reports that Boothe died of complications related to surgery.
