Those who sacrificed their lives honored in South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow and rain turned to sunshine as over 100 people honored those who died for their country during the annual American Legion Post 795 Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Knowing people are "Tahoe Tough" the Legion decided to keep their plans on having the event outdoors, and their prayers were answered when the sun came through and shone on the attendees, speakers, and singers.

Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony

"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

Over 20,000 pounds of food distributed at Food Bank event in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Food Bank was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, delivering both food from their mobile pantry and fresh produce from California Emergency Food Link.

A line of people had formed at the American Legion prior to their opening at 10 p.m. Volunteers from St Theresa’s Bread and Broth came out to help and, for the first time, U-Turn 4 Christ from Pollock Pines joined the collective outreach as volunteers to help others.

American Legion and Gold Star Mom withdraw support from local event

American Legion Post 795 has withdrawn all support and endorsement of the Forever Dreams for Veterans program scheduled at MontBleu on September 6, 2014. Gold Star Mom, Patty Smith, mother of Sgt. Timothy M. Smith who was killed in action, has also rescinded all support. The Rose of Love ride from the Carson City Harley Davidson site to the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe has been cancelled.

'Forever Dreams for Veterans' to raise funds for military brain injuries

Almost once an hour a military veteran commits suicide in the United States according the the Department of Veterans Affairs and among those on active duty the number is still sobering, one a day.

In an effort to bring the plight of American military members suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) to the forefront, a Broadway like show and wellness festival are coming to South Lake Tahoe.

RTO Honors South Lake Tahoe Soldier at Patriots' Luncheon

The mother of a South Lake Tahoe soldier was honored Tuesday at the Reno-Tahoe Open "Patriots Luncheon" at Montreux Golf and Country Club in southwest Reno. The audience also heard from an Air Force pilot who spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The beautifully drawn portrait was the first time Gold Star mom Patricia Smith has seen her son whole and smiling since he was killed in action in Iraq in 2008.

South Lake Tahoe to remember fallen soldiers on Memorial Day

A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Happy Homestead Cemetery, 1261 Johnson Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe. The service will recognize veterans past and present and will be followed by cake and coffee at American Legion Post 795, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
