The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, will visit Barton Memorial Hospital on Monday as part of a tour visiting health care facilities in California and Nevada. The visit coincides with the FCC's Rural Healthcare Pilot Program, in which Barton Health received funding.

UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.

Affordable Care Act made many preventive services no cost to Nevada beneficiaries

In Nevada, the Affordable Care Act — the new health care law — helped 101,333 people with original Medicare get at least one preventive service at no cost to them during the first six months of 2012, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Tuesday. This is 43 percent of those eligible for these services in Nevada. This figure also includes 7,543 in Nevada who have taken advantage of the Annual Wellness Visit provided by the Affordable Care Act.

“With all of the added benefits of less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a reduced risk of infections, the single-incision allows us to do cholecystectomies via one incision in the umbilicus (navel), which is nearly invisible after it heals,” Dr. Welker said.

Nevada Governor to Extend Sunsetting Taxes Into Next Two-Year Budget To Avoid Education Cuts

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said today he will propose to extend a package of taxes now set to expire in June 2013 into the next budget to avoid further cuts to education, which he said cannot withstand further reductions.
To maintain a basically flat spending plan for the two-year budget that will begin on July 1, 2013, Sandoval said the modified business tax that was maintained at a higher rate for large businesses in the 2011 legislative session, along with a small increase in the sales tax, must be continued.

South Lake Tahoe to undergo a ‘complete physical’

Barton Health and other community organizations and businesses have joined forces to give South Lake Tahoe and its surrounding areas a “complete physical.”
