Course to help people cope with life challenges

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 14 at 10:00am, participants in the course will take on life’s challenges by examining factors that prevent us from achieving a more positive outlook—guilt, shame, and fear of inauthenticity—in light of the notion that a purposeful life provides the key to well-being.

Holocaust survivor to speak about tolerance and intervention

Steigmann, a Holocaust survivor and motivational speaker, is coming to the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on Sunday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. Steigmann will share his story about life in a Nazi labor camp, the medical experiments he was subjected to, how he survived and the many lessons he’s learned throughout his life.

Chabad at Lake Tahoe to offer Community Passover Seder

This is no ordinary meal; the Passover Seder (which actually means “order”) incorporates 15 multi-sensory steps that reach deep into the human psyche in every way possible and all at once: Rich melodies, dynamic visuals, prayers and stories, even the visceral senses of taste, smell and touch are part of the interminable tradition.

With criminal justice reform center-stage in the United States, Chabad will offer Crime and Consequence, a new CLE accredited six-session course by the acclaimed Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) exploring 3000 years of Jewish perspective on conviction, sentencing, and criminal rehabilitation.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 4 at 7:00pm participants in the course will challenge their thinking, ponder the implications of ancient Talmudic wisdom for complex modern cases, and get to the heart of the most pressing injustices facing our criminal justice system today.

First baby of 2019 arrives in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first baby of the new year has arrived in South Lake Tahoe at Barton Health's Family Birthing Center. On January 2, 2019 at 5:38 p.m., a baby boy weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. and 21" long was born to local residents Mordey and Shaina Richler.

This is the fourth child for the Richlers, who run Chabad Jewish Center. As customary with his parent's faith, Baby Richler will be named when he is eight days old.

South Lake Tahoe girl helps ease pain of young Camp Fire victims

Donations have been transported by the car and truck load from South Lake Tahoe to Paradise, full of help for the victims of the Camp Fire which, to date, has destroyed 9,700 homes, businesses and other structures and burned 149,500 acres.

One of those loads was delivered by 13-year-old Jaymee Levin.

Jewish community responds to Pittsburgh massacre

As the extent of the horror perpetrated in Pittsburgh is being recognized throughout not just Pittsburgh and the United States, but the world, shock and grief have followed in waves. But so, too, has the desire for action, for a concrete response to the worst anti-Semitic attack on American soil.

There's the old joke about the Jewish atheist who refused to send his son to a Jewish school but wanting a private school education for his child, he sent him to Trinity School, despite its denominational roots, it was a great school and completely secular. After a month, the boy came home and said casually, "By the way, Dad, I learned what Trinity means! It means 'The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.'"

The father could barely control his anger. He grabbed his son by the shoulders and said, "Listen here Boychick, there is only one God... and we don't believe in him!"

Volunteer Day at the Virginia City Jewish Cemetery

Celebrants at “Purim in NYC” will get a taste of all parts of Manhattan, including a NY Style Deli, Pickle Making in the Lower East Side, L'Chaim in Times Square, NYC Caricature Artist, Megillah Reading in Manhattan, and a “Masquerade in Manhattan” as it is traditional to dress up on this holiday.

Lake Tahoe man's pursuit of Olympic history

South Shore resident Larry Sidney narrowly missed earning a spot on the historic Israeli Olympic Skeleton team headed to PyeongChang in February.

"It's amazingly exciting to be part of it," said Sidney on his return to Lake Tahoe after months of traveling the world and participating in skeleton races in pursuit of an Olympic spot.

Donations from Vail Resorts CEO and his wife to focus on mental health issues

Mental Health issues in communities where they have operations will be the focus of a new charitable fund created by Vail's Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz and his wife, Elana Amsterdam.

Katz and Amsterdam created the new charitable fund in October 2017 with funding of approximately $58 million.

Six Jewish Debates coming to Lake Tahoe

Holocaust survivor to speak in South Lake Tahoe

Holocaust Survivor Dr. Jacob Eisenbach will be the special guest speaker at Chabad at the Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe on July 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Jacob Eisenbach was born in Poland in 1923. Nicknamed “Kuba” by his father, Eisenbach grew up in a loving household with all of the hopes and dreams of any family… he was to be a doctor, his brother Sam, an author… his sister dreamed of a career as a pharmacist. That all changed when Hitler’s army invaded Poland in 1939.

South Lake Tahoe locals commemorate National Day of Prayer

The first national call to prayer came in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since then, a call to prayer has continued from President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 to an annual national day of prayer signed by a joint resolution by Congress in 1952 that was signed by President Truman.

Now, the National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday in May.

History comes alive with Living Voices performances at SLT schools

What was it like for Anne Frank and other young people during the Holocaust? Or for families getting off the boat in New York and making their way through Ellis Island? Who were the women who led the fight for the right to vote?

These stories were told to students in South Lake Tahoe this week through the Living Voices program presented at South Tahoe and Mt. Tallac High Schools and South Tahoe Middle School.

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, leaders of various religions and denominations blessed the new building of a Jewish synagogue in Reno on October 10 evening.

Religious leaders of Roman Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha’i, United Methodist, Presbyterian, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Unification Church traditions participated in the dedication ceremony of this new building of Temple Beth Or (House of Light), a Jewish congregation launched in 2009, and read their respective prayers.
