University of Nevada, Reno to host Bill Nye The Science Guy

The public is invited to be entertained and educated with Bill Nye the Science Guy Sept. 6, the first of several presentations in the annual Discover Science Lecture Series at the University of Nevada, Reno. The College of Science and Associated Students of the University of Nevada are bringing Nye to the University’s Lawlor Events Center at 7 p.m. All tickets are $5 per person, available through the Lawlor box office.

Recent data indicate more rapid warming and accelerating greenhouse gas emissions than previously projected. As the political process addresses the issues, misinformation floods the public space, creating confusion and delay. What must be done to reduce emissions and begin to pull greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere in order to avoid dangerous climate change and to return the Earth to a safe-climate future? How can the public and decision-makers cut through the spin and denial in order to do what is necessary?

Nutrition science researcher Dr. Kimber Stanhope will present a study at Lake Tahoe on July 26 that was recently featured in the CBS News 60 Minutes investigative report with Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the metabolic effects of sugar consumption.
The 6 p.m. presentation will be at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, as part of its monthly lecture series.

Residents who would like to help people learn about the region's environmental assets and challenges are needed to serve as volunteer docents at the Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center and the UC Davis Eriksson Education Center. Located in Incline Village and Tahoe City respectively, the two UC Davis education centers are well positioned along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Sometimes, it might be a headache or nausea when passing by a department store’s fragrance counter or riding in an elevator with someone wearing a certain fragrance. However, there is a growing number of people who suffer more severe reactions to these and many other types of products and chemicals. This condition is known as multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and involves people who have developed an acute sensitivity to various chemicals in the environment.
