SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a very short window for small businesses to apply for the latest round in COVID-19 relief grants. From December 30 2020 - January 8, 2021, businesses can apply for some of the $475 million that will be made available in two rounds.

Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School kindergarten signups start in January

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) has started taking names for the Fall '21 roster of kindergarteners. If you have a child that will be turning five on or before Sept 1, 2021 and want to fill an open seat at LTESMS, please email the "Kindergarten Enrollment Request Form" found on the school's website to mtruszewski@ltusd.org between Jan 4 and March 26, 2021.

First lottery set for new shoreline moorings around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Association (TRPA) will be conducting their first lottery for new moorings (buoys, boat lifts, etc.) at Lake Tahoe.

In 2018 the Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan was adopted, putting a cap on the total number of moorings and piers allowed in the Tahoe Basin. The plan establishes an annual lottery to allocate new moorings until all allocations are distributed.

Two-way immersion program in South Lake Tahoe hits milestone

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a long, hard-fought effort to get it done, but the determination of Kathy Haven and a group of dedicated parents in 2006 has brought the two-way immersion (TWI) program at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) its first group of 13-year students and graduates.

Starting in 2007, 20 students enrolled in the very first kindergarten TWI class at Bijou Elementary and that group of students will be graduating from South Tahoe High School at the end of the week. They have had 13 years of school taught in both Spanish and English.

Winning $14M lottery ticket sold at Raley's at the Y in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Someone is $14 million richer after buying a Super Lotto Plus ticket at Raley's at the Y in South Lake Tahoe.

On Saturday night, six numbers were drawn by the California Lottery, and only one ticket matched all of them.

The lucky numbers were 6-7-20-27-42 and the mega-number 12.

A spokesperson at the SLT Raley's said they don't know who the lucky winner is and most likely won't know more until the three-day weekend is over.

Two people matched five numbers and won $17,513 each. The odds of matching all five plus the Mega number was 1 in 41,416,353.

Bijou Community School taking steps to become 100% two-way immersion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been twelve years since Bijou Community School in South Lake Tahoe started offering two-way immersion classes where students become bilingual and learn Spanish and English in their daily work.

Registration for kindergarten students in Lake Tahoe Unified School District for the 2019/20 school year will be held April 29-May 10, 2019 for Tahoe Valley and Sierra House elementary schools. For those enrolling in the Two-Way Immersion program at Bijou and wanting to enter the lottery for enrollment at Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School, the deadline is March 22.

Douglas County senior scammed out of $34,000 over 20-month period

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently made connections with a senior citizen through their new Caring Neighbors Program. They found the senior had been scammed out of over $34,000 over the past 20 months.

In the program, a deputy and a volunteer visit seniors to obtain needed information such as consent, next of kin and medication information. The information is beneficial in case of a future emergency involving the senior citizen.

Victims of scams who paid on Western Union may be eligible for a refund

Scammers have been making money for years by convincing their victims to send money for a variety of reasons including promised prizes, loans, jobs, discounted products or other financial rewards in exchange for money upfront. At times the scammers even pretend to be family members in need of cash or law enforcement officers demanding payment. The scammers told people to send money through Western Union. No one received the cash, prizes or services they were promised, and before now there was no way to get their money back.

City of South Lake Tahoe looks at temporary ban of marijuana sales

There is no need to rush into an ordinance regulating the sale of marijuana in South Lake Tahoe. That was the overwhelming opinion of the SLT City Council Tuesday night after a special, four-hour long Cannabis Workshop.

"We owe it to our community to make sure we take every measure to protect them," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

Sign ups being taken for Magnet School kindergarten lottery

The lottery to assign spots for the Fall '17 kindergarten class at Lake Tahoe Environmental School (Magnet School) will be held in Spring. Signups to be part of the lottery will start when school resumes after the holidays on January 9.

It is not a first-come, first-served process so parents have until the end of March to sign up.

Mandatory meeting for Fall Fire Academy applicants at LTCC

Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.

Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.

South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten sign-ups

Sign-ups for both kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in Lake Tahoe Unified Schools will be held May 4 - May 8.

To be eligible for enrollment a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015. If your child will turn five years of age between September 2 and December 2, 2015, they qualify for transitional kindergarten which is a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

South Lake Tahoe Powerball winner comes forward

While every day is a great one in South Lake Tahoe, today is particularly a good one for Linda Emmons. That is because she came forward to claim her $708,769 Powerball prize. Emmons matched the numbers 24-44-31-11 and 40 on a $20 Quick Pick® ticket, missing only the Powerball number 27 for the March 11th drawing.

As South Tahoe Now carried the story on March 12, that lucky ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven located at 3923 Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.

A ticket sold at the 7-11 store on Pioneer Trail matched five of five numbers, except for the POWERBALL jackpot, winning $708,769 in Wednesday night's lottery drawing.

The numbers are They are: 11, 24, 31, 40, 44 and Power Number 27.

The winner hadn't contacted the store as of 11:45 a.m. Thursday according to manager Rhonda St. Onge. Her store will receive money from the Lottery as well, but St. Onge didn't know how much yet.

2015/16 LTUSD Kindergarten Enrollment - The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) in Meyers is now taking names for the Fall ‘15 “line-up” of kindergartners. If you have a child who will be turning 5 on or before September 1st, 2015, please come to the Magnet School office (1095 East San Bernardino Ave.) to fill out a lottery application. The lottery will be held on April 1, 2015.

Enrollment at the Magnet School is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis, so you may submit the application any time before the end of March.

If you would like your child to attend kindergarten at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESM) for the 2015/16 school year you may start turning in student names after the district's holiday break.

LTESMS will start taking lottery forms on January 5. To be a kindergartner in the fall children have to be 5 before September 1, 2015. For those that turn 5 after the first, students will be enrolled in Transitional Kinder program held at Tahoe Valley Elementary.

South Lake Tahoe resident victim of international phone scam

An elderly South Lake Tahoe resident is the victim of a phone scam where he sent a undisclosed amount of money to unknown people. The phone number initiating the scam was from the area code 876, which is Jamaica.

The resident called SLT Police Department to alert them that he received phone calls from people he didn't know who were trying to obtain money from him. The victim was told by the caller that he was stuck in customs and needed help getting out. The suspect convinced the elderly victim to send him a large amount of money.

Transitional Kindergarten Classes to be Held at Tahoe Valley Elementary

Children not 5 years old by the time school starts in the fall are unable to attend kindergarten due to a new state law, but the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will have Transitional Kindergarten (TK).

The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2010, changed the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age 5. The law phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for three years, beginning this fall for children born between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2.
