Event Date:
August 5, 2015 - 6:00pm
Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.
Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.
Interested students must also complete a prerequisite in order to be eligible for the Fire Academy. Students must take and pass HEA106 (Emergency Medical Responder) or have a valid EMR card, or they must complete HEA140A (Emergency Medical Technician) with a “B” or better or have the equivalent EMT course certificate of completion.
The Fire Academy at LTCC is a three-quarter-long program that starts each fall and culminates with the training hours necessary to apply for Firefighter 1 Certification through the California State Fire Marshal’s Office. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for employment as a firefighter. The program is physically demanding, and the curriculum conforms to standards for certification established by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Classes are typically held on Saturdays and Mondays, 8 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. with occasional schedule changes.
Classroom and manipulative skills instruction for the Academy includes ice rescue, swift water rescue, interview techniques, forcible entry, confined spaces, auto extrication, communications, fire protection systems, incident command systems, hazardous materials, fire control, salvage, firefighter survival, ventilation, truck company operations, public utilities, wildland fire, and live fire drills.
