LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to start work in April on their $4.1M project to convert the existing T-intersection at US50 and SR89 in Meyers into a three-leg roundabout.

Federal funds will be used to create what transportation officials say is a safety project by reducing the number and/or severity of collisions at the intersection. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe is the destination of thousands of people a month, no matter what the season. Chain controls down on Highway 50 over Echo; Expect heavy traffic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Happy President's Day! What will go down as a weekend remembered for years to come, residents will continue to shovel out and get on the road to ski, shop, and work, while visitors will hit the slopes or begin a journey home that most likely took them four-five times longer than normal.

With chain controls down over Echo Summit, the journey shouldn't be hampered by snow but it will be hampered by traffic. I80 has removed some restrictions and other roads might see more of the same as the day goes on and the sun shines.

CHP to continue testing electronic closure of roads in Meyers

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) electronic closure testing on two roads in the Meyers area this weekend is working but a glitch in the system will continue to direct visitors in the area through neighborhoods as they make their way west towards Sacramento and the Bay Area.

Letter: Solution to Meyers traffic problems

We are not unique in the fact that traffic apps have been showing shortcuts and causing headaches in neighborhoods, which have become freeways filled with people speeding through them to "save" up to a minute on their commute.

We do not have the luxury of support from our elected officials as other communities do, so we must come up with a solution ourselves.

Meyers is under siege every weekend with tourists trying to get home after a long weekend of enjoying what we sometimes take for granted and they are using traffic apps to try to get around the gridlock.

CHP advises motorists to not travel to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The stories of 10-15 hours to get to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area on Friday were not isolated, and many of the repeat reports are occurring on Saturday.

Epic ski conditions have beckoned visitors to the mountains over the three-day holiday weekend, but what created those ski conditions has also caused local roads that aren't passable and clogged highways with frequent closures.

I80 reopens to passenger vehicles only

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Interstate 80 has reopened to eastbound/westbound passenger vehicles only. The road was closed Thursday night and all day Friday due to whiteout conditions and heavy snow.

R2 chain controls are in place from Alta to the Nevada state line.

Still no ETO for big rigs at this time.

Both eastbound/westbound travel is allowed on US50 over Echo Summit with R-2 chain controls from the 3000-foot level to Meyers.

Power out to parts of Meyers and Alpine County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from Liberty Utilities are in the South Upper Truckee area to restore power to 152 customers. They say there may be a delay in restoration as there are an accident and heavy traffic in the area impeding the crew's response.

Out in Alpine County, 152 customers are without power and crews are searching for the cause of the outage at this hour.

As more information becomes available this story will be updated.

Traffic on Highway 50 held for hours due to snow slide

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Traffic is being held in Meyers and Twin Bridges due to a snow slide on Echo Summit.

The slide occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. and according to the CHP in Placerville, it covered some vehicles in the westbound lane. There has been a standstill line of traffic on Highway 50 through Meyers all afternoon and cars are still stopped there waiting for the road to reopen.

Travel restrictions placed on two roads in Meyers to test electronic closures

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has created electronic closures on two roads in Meyers ahead of a snowy, crowded three-day holiday weekend in Lake Tahoe.

Two of the culprits in recent standstill traffic jams as visitors depart Lake Tahoe at the end of a weekend are electronically closed until Monday, February 18 at 9:00 p.m.

Closures of Sawmill Road and North Upper Truckee were initiated by the CHP in Meyers, then uploaded by Caltrans onto Waze, Google and other maps systems used on cellphones.

Sandbags available for area residents at several locations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Douglas County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are urging residents to prepare for the possibility of flooding and high winds as a storm with high winds and heavy rain enters the region.

Douglas County has sandbags available at nine locations and urges residents to assemble them on their property if there is a chance of flooding. Sandbag locations can are self-fill and the current locations are:

Zephyr Cove Park, Warrior Way - Sand is located in the upper parking lot

Travel issues remain around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - After Caltrans attempted to open I80 this afternoon, it closed again for westbound traffic after a weather cell moved in, causing visibility issues. It is starting to move again but all tractor-trailer combinations are not allowed on I80 due to visibility at this hour.

From Kingvale to Truckee, chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.

From Meyers to South Lake Tahoe westbound traffic is backing up along Highway 50 towards the Y as cars are attempting to head west over Echo Summit.
