Message from the Mayor: For those who look beyond their own backyard, it's time to speak out for our future

Progressive or provincial? That is the crux of the issue facing our south shore community during this election and well into the next decade. Do we want a viable, prosperous community that our children and grandchildren are proud to call home? Or do we want the Tahoe of yesterday—only older and shabbier, with fewer families and more boarded up businesses?

Tough Mudder events take fitness to extremes

As Natalie Mar staggered up the steep switchbacks last weekend near Lake Tahoe, she wasn't certain she'd make it.
She had just scaled a 12-foot wall, dived into a bath of icy water and slithered through mud while ducking barbed wires that dangled 8 inches overhead. And now she was running an 11-mile trail with a 1,500-foot elevation change.
"I'm going to die," Mar, 24, thought.
But she didn't, and she cleared the switchbacks. Her reward: to belly-crawl under live wires.

Editor, Today I ran the Sierra Recon race and entered the green trail the beginners course. I run a different race about every 6 weeks ranging from mud and trail runs to half marathons with all different types of terrain.  Today I witnessed a man die on the course. Made in Tahoe: Don the Baker dishes up shtick with his sweets

In this life, Don Ewing is a baker. In a previous life, he probably had his own TV show based on his life as a comedian who does shtick based on flour, yeast and water.
While South Shore is lucky to have Howie Nave as the emcee of all things standup comedy, Ewing, known around town as "Don the Baker," knows he can't compete on the same stage.
"I'm not really not funny," he says. "I'm not rich, either. I'm a baker's man who kneads dough."
