Don Q's Fishing report for week of July 11-17

Great fishing is being reported throughout Nevada, Northern California, Lake Tahoe and Sierra this summer. Here is this week's fishing report, through July 17, for rivers, lakes and streams in the region.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake:
Hope you all had a GREAT 4th – we sure did – had a bit of weather come thru – couple of sprinkles here and there – heard a few thunder boomers last night – love the sounds of nature along with the sights – the bald eagle is still around at the back of the Lake – sure was awesome to see our National Bird on our Independence Day.
Talking about GREAT – that’s what catching was – GREAT!
Lots of limits coming out of the Lake this week – fishing the inlets with nightcrawlers, Jigs, Garlic Power Bait or Power Worms.
Trolling Thomas Buoyants (Red and Gold, of course), Kastmasters (you all remember what your grandparents used to use), pulling flashers (grandpa used those, too) and nightcrawlers or just trolling with a nightcrawler.
Drifting the rock piles with nightcrawlers or Power Baits.
Shorefishing with Salmon Eggs, nightcrawlers, or Power Bait.
DGF put in another load of fish Thursday.
Bishop local Jason Molinar had a visit from family and they out did themselves – limits for all 2 days in a row – Madison, Robert, Hailey & Amy Glass made the trek from Long Beach to spend the 4th at the Lake – this was Hailey and Amy’s first and second limits – good job, girls!
They were caught on Pink and White Mice tails and Garlic Power Bait.
As we reported last week, they started working on the bridge – they had roped off the North Lake Hiker parking area at the North Lake road last week -this week we have a storage container and forklift in the roped off area. We’ll keep you informed of the progress.
Those of you who have been up to the Lake this year may have noticed the markings on the road and markers at the 2nd bridge – also known as Cadillac Corner – due to a brand spankin’ new Cadillac not makin’ the corner – ending up in the creek & bursting into flames (all parties survived).
Inyo County is going to straighten the road and replace the bridge. Construction to begin this month – the bridge is to be approximately 80 feet long and wide enough for two cars with pedestrian walk-ways on both sides.
KEEPING THIS IN - Guess it’s that time of year to remind you of a few things – when using BUG JUICE – not many of them – think the last cold streak killed most of the big ones and the smaller ones haven’t hatched yet (could be because of the lack of run-off) - or SANITIZER you need to really wash your hands before fishing - then rub some Salmon Egg juice, worm dirt or Anglers Bros Trout attractant (got it in stock at the Lake) to take that smell off.
Remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen – we saw a few anglers that looked a bit like cooked lobster last year.
Believe it or not – temps have been in the low-80’s for highs and in the low 50s for lows. We do have a chance of thunder boomers and showers in the afternoon for the next week. DON’T FORGET YOUR PONCHOS.
You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.
And, of course, we'll have HOMEMADE pie and ice cream (until it’s gone), sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa!
Looking forward to seeing you all in the very near future.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake:
Summer is rolling along and both the fishing and weather was exceptional this week.
California DFG continues to keep the lake supplied with Rainbows in the 3/4 to 1lb range which made for a lot of happy anglers over the holiday week. If you get skunked out there right now, you're probably doing something wrong - the bite is very, very good.
Angler of the week was a young man named Bobby Gasaway from Yucaipa who scored a 3 lb 9 oz beauty early on in the week and then followed that up with a beautiful 4 lb 7 oz 'bow on Friday, both on Garlic Power Bait.
The inlets near the back of the lake are pretty thick with pan sized rainbows but nothing of size is showing back there.
The channel to the left of the island, the Rock Slide and the west shore near the dam were holding tons of fish this week.
Shore anglers did excellent on stocking day and the next morning but after the fish spread out a bit, boaters, tubers and kayakers had a distinct advantage in finding the schools of 'bows.
Not only were the big fish eating the Garlic PB this week (in Rainbow or Green) but plenty of stockers were falling for the stuff as well.
Folks also found success using nightcrawlers and mealworms fished under a bobber near the dam or in the back of the lake.
The soft plastics bite is still on a tear at South Lake, especially near the dam and at the Rock Slide, although the only big fish caught this week on the jig was...well...caught & released by myself and weighed approximately 3lbs. Rainbow sparkle, pink/blue sparkle and fire tiger were the best colors.
Trout worm aficionados had great success on pink, orange or grasshopper 3" trout worms split-shotted with an 18 to 24" leader.
Not many reports from lure tossers this week but folks out trolling Tasmanian Devils and Thomas Buoyant either on top shallow and in tight to shore, or as deep as 6 colors of leadcore line well off shore, were racking up great catch counts on pan sized Rainbows.
This is a sign that the summer pattern is kicking into gear and there are now some good numbers of fish holding in deeper water.
Those who love to troll are sure to appreciate this news.
The water level at South Lake finally stabilized however it did just below the bottom of the launch ramp. The only option for private boaters now is to launch right off the rocky shoreline to the left of the official launch ramp.
This process can be sketchy but folks with smaller boats are giving it a go.
South Fork Bishop Creek: With exception of just a few anglers, the vast majority of canyon visitors this week reported good to excellent creek fishing for rainbows to 14 inches.
Salmon eggs and Garlic Power Bait were the baits of choice and folks fishing the deeper pools were limiting out with very little trouble.
Panther Martins also produced exceptionally well this week - the yellow with red dot pattern and the holographic rainbow pattern being the colors that the stream team found effective.
Flows have been reduced somewhat to at or near ideal levels.
Intake II: Basically a repeat of last week - only a few reports but those reports were all good, especially for bait fishing with Power Bait.
Nothing of size reported.
North Lake: Not too many reports out of North Lake this week but I did get a solid report from a fly fisher who reported excellent action on small Hornbergs and olive wooly buggers, especially when the surface activity was heavy near the outlet and the weed line.
Trail Report: If you're looking to get into the backcountry - now is the time.
Great weather, open trails, blooming wildflowers and epic scenery everywhere you look.
The skeeters are definitely around so bring your deet.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
Fishing has picked up for rainbows in the 10 to 15 inch class, perfect pan size for camping.
Best area has been near or on the dam using small spinner or power bait.
Both upper and lower lakes were planted by CDFG last week.
Don't forget your bug spray, because the mosquito's are always biting.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
Bridgeport has been excellent from boats this week and we have had a couple decent reports from bait anglers off the shore down near the dam as well. The best though has been bait fishing from boats.
Power bait, crawlers and power eggs have been the ticket for the most part.
Fly anglers have been doing well stripping streamers with sinking lines or midging with damsel, Chironomid and midge patterns.
There's still a few anglers trolling in the deeper water and having success with lead-core rigs and blades/crawlers, Bouyants and small Rapalas.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Good. Full to the brim. Clear and getting warmer every day.
With the warmer water comes lots of weeds.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Weeds are already a problem. Especially at inlets around the lake making midging difficult.
Pull streamers early and switch to midges around mid-day.

BUCKS LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BURNSIDE LAKE, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
Many fly anglers have been going to this little lake and having great success.
Black gnat pattern have been working well.
The CDFG also planted this lake last week.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
Fishing has been hot for the last week, In three days I received over twenty confirmed reports of anglers catching 1 to 4 pound rainbows.
Here is a small list of some anglers. Brandon Rutshmann from Rocklin Ca-two at 2 pounds on power bait, Michael Fletcher and Chris Moline from Sacramento Ca- 7 rainbows 2 to 3 pounds with yellow power bait on the dam, 2 to 3 pound browns trolling Emigrant Bay,
My favorite was little Victoria Claas from Santa Clara Ca caught a 3 pound rainbow while camping and fishing with her father.
Tammy Flowers caught a 3 pound rainbow from Woods Creek area using worms and marsh mellows, I wonder if she is related. I do have Flowers in my family.
Not all anglers had great success. Judy Cothan from Danville. Calif., caught a limit of of trout while her husband got skunked.
Anglers have been using yellow power bait to night crawlers from the shore. While trollers have been using blue and silver kastmaster lures.
Best areas have been at the spillway, dam or Woods Creek area.
The Eldorado Irrigation Dist planted 500 rainbow trout last Monday ranging from 2 to 6 pounds, the CDFG planted the lake on June 30 with 1000 pounds of catchable rainbows.
The Caples lake marina and store is open seven days a week for launching, boat rentals and for all the things you forgot to bring with you.
For more info call the Caples lake Resort at (209) 258-8888.

CARSON RIVER, NEV:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
Fishing has been great from the broken dam down to the golf course.
Many anglers have been using 1/2 a night crawler and a couple split shots drifting through the deeper waters.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
Water level has dropped and the temperature has risen.
A good combination for fishing the rivers.
Salmon eggs or nightcrawlers have been most productive.
Wilson Ornellas from Valley Springs, Calif., was using a combination of power bait and a worm and caught a good stringer of rainbows 3 to 4 pounds on the East Fork, Larry Fraser from Lathrop Ca caught 5 trout ranging 1.5 to 4.5 pounds.
The CDFG and Alpine County have planted this last week.
As a reminder to those with mobility issues, there is a handicap fishing access in Hope Valley at the intersection of Highway 88 and 89.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Cutthroat trout fishing can be good this time of year, both in the estuary or up river. Anglers are reminded to check regulations before heading out as there are bait restrictions upstream of the estuary.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.
Pike fishing has also been poor.
There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
The green goo is at it's thickest but the winds move it around and clear water can be found. Red brassies and Stevie's M-80 in 13-15 feet of water.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: The lake is down to about mid-level and continuing to drop.
Water temps are getting up there and over ideal 57F about everywhere.
Algae is getting worse but still can get down through it with no problem in most places but take your net and pull it up through the water and see if algae is just on top or homogenized all the way to bottom. If latter, move.
Daphnia moving so good one day one place then bad the next.
Be ready to move too.
Fishing Conditions: Fair to Good. The 'McGee Miracle" has started and a good number of big fish have started to show up in McGee Bay and Little Hilton but they have now spread out as no stream channel.
The bad news is that the low run-off this year has made for the entire McGee stream channel under the lake being clogged with weeds.
The fish are as close as they can be in 60 F water off the channel in about 12-14 ft of water currently but what happens when that water is 65—70 F???
There are still fish at Green Banks, Sandy and Leighton that will tire of the 62-65 F water and head around the corner to McGee and Little Hilton soon.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

Water is very clear and low when compared to this time last year.
Weeds are growing in now big time.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Big Trico hatch early in the morning.
Followed by Caddis into the evening.
Hopper season has arrived!
Fish the far bank and slap it on the water so it makes some noise.
Nymphing is getting tougher as the weeds grow in and the water drops.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas County reports:
When the wind is not blowing the fishing has been fair to good.
Float tubers have been doing well on the west side of the dam or on the south end of the lake with a black or olive wooly bugger.
Shore anglers have had best luck near the campground or the main dam.
They have been using rainbow or yellow power bait, inflated night crawlers have also been productive.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:

The river is still cloudy and lower and fishing is slow.
Lot's of caddis and PMD's. Fox's Caddis Poopah, Brooks Hot Creek caddis San Juan worms and egg patterns.
Recent stockings have improved the fishing here.
Lower Owens River:
Current flow is 510 CFS. Try the Upper Owens.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River Water Conditions: Good. As of 7/6 the flows are steady at 65 CFS.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Flows and weather are perfect for wet wading.
Be advised I saw plenty of mud snails hanging on my pants the other day when I got off the water so clean your gear and help prevent the spread of this invasive species.
Big Trico hatch early in the morning, with a spattering of Caddis as well throughout the day.
Go deep and heavy. Concentrate on fishing the deeper bend pools with a significant amount of weight.
Mainly attractor patterns like a worm or a coachmen.
Owens River Gorge Water conditions: Great. Flow: 45 CFS. This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP.
Fishing Conditions: Not much changing here week to week. Be stealthy as the water is gin clear and the fish can definitely see you coming.

Rock Creek Water conditions: Great. Flows are at 35 CFS as of 7/6.
Fishing conditions: Great! Stick mainly to attractor patterns.
Big and bright usually does the trick here.
Rush Creek: Water conditions:
Fair. As of 7/6 flows are at 10 CFS above Grant Lake.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Flows are down again, and the water is Gin clear, so be sure to use lighter tippet and be stealthy. Stick mainly to attractor patterns.
Lower Owens River Water conditions: Poor. Flows at 504 CFS as of 7/6.
Fishing conditions: With the flows up over 500 CFS now it's probably not a bad idea to fish somewhere else, or go down below Bishop to where the river is wider with no banks. Wet wading in the slow water must be nice when the temps are in the 90's and 100's! Just be careful.

Good. Flows at 61 CFS as of 7/6.
Water conditions: Considering flows were somewhere south of 900 CFS this time last year, might not be much in the way of fishable water by the end of this month so get here fast!
Fishing conditions: Great. There are several closed campgrounds down there and trespassing in a closed area will get you an expensive citation. So stay out of all closed campgrounds and areas.
The water adjacent to the closed campgrounds is open to fishing, but make sure you're on the riverbed.
Lots of stoneflies and caddis. Plenty of Drakes as well.
There is a ton of food in the water for these fish right now.

Chuck Fields reported that the fishing has been slow for shore anglers on both ends of the lake.
The boaters have been trolling early before the jet skiers arrive.
They have been trolling right down the middle of the lake, 20 feet down with flashers and a crawler.
You have to work for them, but anglers have brought in a few.
Lake level has dropped about 7 feet so far this year, but clarity is still good.

East Walker – West Walker – Sceirine Ranch - Hunewill Pond:

have all been doing well.
Water temps are still around 64 degrees and the fish are still feeling pretty good. Lots of 20 inch plus fish are being reported.
In addition to the dries you can fish nymph patterns like buckskin caddis, fox's Poopah, 3-wire caddis, z-wing caddis, rainbow warrior, wd-40, zebra midge and blood midges.
Haven't heard much from the Rosachi section lately but there should still be some fish holding in this section, and likely the same types of patterns should be successful.
West Walker River: The West is fishing excellent with spinners, flies and bait lately, the water is low and clear so you may need to be a bit sneaky, but if you get into stealth mode you should be able to do great.
Panther martins and Mepps have been doing well; crawlers and salmon eggs have been good too.
For flies try hoppers, beetles, ants, royal Wulffs, elk hair caddis or humpies.
Sceirine Ranch:
The Sceirine has been fishing very well this week, lots of nice 20+ inch rainbows being caught.
Some browns down there lately, but mostly bows.
Dead-drift crayfish, soft hackles, pheasant tails, various caddis nymphs and
dry/dropper rigs have all been doing well.
Hunewill Pond: The last clients we had on the pond had an excellent day, mostly fishing damsels, stillwater nymphs, soft hackles and ap emergers. Either a very slow troll or a very slow strip has been the ticket. Most fish are in the 16 to 20
inch range but some are tipping the tape up to 25 inches.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
East Walker River: Flow has been up and down  and is currently 110 CFS.
Hatch consists of midges, mayflys and crane flys and caddis in the evening.
Nymphing is good with WD-40's, zebra midges, baetis emergers and buckskin nymphs.
If the " miracle mile" is packed as it has been fishing is good down river.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River: Water Conditions:
Great. Flows variable on a daily basis - down to 110 CFS as of 7/6.
Fishing Conditions: Good to Excellent. Consistancy has gone out the window this week where one day there’s a sizable mayfly hatch in the morning, and some days it's in the late afternoon.
One day the fishing can be great, the next it can be pretty difficult.
Fish hopper patterns along the banks. Try a big Stimi or a Chernobyl.
Some caddis still hanging around but later in the day after the sun goes behind the mountains.

WASHOE LAKE, WAHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Washoe Lake dried up in 2004 and, although it is presently full and has been restocked, the fish population, consisting mostly of channel catfish and white bass, is small. Fishing is expected to be poor.

WOODS LAKE, CALIF:
Doug Busey of Douglas Country reports:
A small lake located about a mile north of Caples Lake on hiway 88.
Planted last week by CDFG.
The lake has camping facilities and plenty of hiking trails.
