SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local community has several different locations that offer food to those who find themselves needing extra groceries during not only the pandemic, but year-round.

The following is a list of locations at this time. All locations are in South Lake Tahoe unless otherwise noted:

American Legion's annual Toy Drive for Christmas Cheer on October 3

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The American Legion Stella Van Dyke Post 795, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion of South Lake Tahoe will hold their annual Toy Drive on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, from noon to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.

Kudos: Virtual Bliss Assembly raises $570 for Tahoe Magic

LAKE TAHOE – The Tahoe Bliss Experiences®, together with local small business owners, produced the Virtual Bliss Assembly April 22-25 and raised $570 for Tahoe Magic during the event that included four days of live, online experiences that focused on ways in which each of us can remain mindful, fit, healthy, and aware while remaining safe at home.

Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

FEET Fund to help families with costs of educational trips

The "Angel of Tahoe" Lisa Maloff has made $100,000 available to students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to provide equitable educational trips for all students through 6th grade.

As a result, a F.E.E.T (Fulfill Equitable Educational Trips) Fund was started by a newly formed group founded by Kathy Haven.

Hosting their first Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino sponsored B&B’s Monday Meal on June 25th. It was really great having the newest hotel and casino on Tahoe’s south shore hosting a community dinner for the needy in the community. Hard Rock’s partnering with B&B demonstrates their commitment to being involved with the community and being a part of the solution to improving the quality of life for our community’s at risk population.

She has done it again... Lisa Maloff had created yet another opportunity to enrich the lives of South Lake Tahoe children. With her generous donation of $100,000, we have begun the F.E.E.T. Fund: a fund that will fulfill equitable educational trips for LTUSD school grades.

The local Tahoe Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 has been an ongoing sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) and generously hosts two to three sponsorship dinners annually. Their most current AAD sponsorship was at Bread and Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on March 12, and thanks to their sponsorship, B&B fed 84 dinner guests a ‘home style’ meatloaf dinner served with mashed potatoes with gray, broccoli and a green salad lovingly cooked and prepared by the B&B’s wonderful volunteer cooks.

The Soroptimist international of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) organization has a long history of service to the community. This wonderful group of women chose to sponsor a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment on Monday, March 5th, as their continuing commitment to serve those in need. The SITS members representing their organization at their sponsorship dinner were Jean Bergner, Julie Nelson, Shelly Martinez, Carolyn Robinson and Joanne Shope and Wendy David, B&B Volunteer Team #1 lead cook.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is a service organization that dedicates its members to supporting charities and events which benefit the community, especially children. Every month the Kiwanis Club selects a different community program or organization to support, and for the month of January, the club has sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” for the last eight years.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge donates 50 boxes of food to local families

For seven years the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 1632 has supplied boxes of food supplies for local families in need, and this year will be no different.

This week, members of the lodge will deliver 50 decorated boxes, each packed full of a ham, vegetables, canned goods, pasta, potatoes, bread, tortillas and everything else needed to feed a family a big holiday meal, and then more for leftovers.

This year's recipients will be selected by the Family Resource Center.

As an all volunteer, non-profit organization, Bread & Broth greatly values the many partnerships that have developed over the 28 years that it was been feeding the needy in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. These partnerships involve volunteering, donating food and funds and sponsoring Monday Meal Adopt A Day of Nourishment dinners.

Thanks to a generous donor, Temple Bat Yam hosted the August 14th Bread & Broth Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall. B&B, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, began feeding the needy of the Tahoe South Shore community in 1989 as a multi-denominational food outreach program. Throughout the past 28 years, volunteers of all faiths have supported the B&B program and Temple Bat Yam’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment dinner is a testament to the continuing support of all faiths in feeding the hungry of our community.

Chautauqua of Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill at Dangberg Historic Park

In a one man show, Chris Bayer will portray both Major William Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington in “The Major and the Gambler” at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 pm.

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

The Elk Lodge is a service organization whose members work together on national and local levels to help the needy through community service. The Tahoe Douglas Elk Lodge exemplifies their mission through the many serve projects they perform for the South Lake Tahoe community and the Bread & Broth organization.

Hosting their bi-monthly Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment, Kirkwood Mountain Resort sent a great crew from their Mountain Operations team to help B&B volunteers at the Monday Meal on March 13th. The Kirkwood team led by Tom Fortune included Kelly Keith, Reid and Mattie Devine, and Mike Niccoli and his daughter Iris. Thanks to Vail EpicPromise grant funding, Kirkwood hosts six Adopt A Days a year providing nutritious and filling meals to many hungry members of our community.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge to provide food for 50 families

For the past six years, members of the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge have been providing meals for the less fortunate members of the community. What began as a small project with members filling up 15 boxes of food has grown into a much larger project with 50 families receiving the meals this holiday season.

Moose Lodge 1632 is asking for help from the community to fill these boxes. They are seeking donations of food to supplement the food boxes being prepared for distribution to needy families in the South Lake Tahoe area.

Toy and Food Drive for Christmas Cheer on October 1

New, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items are being collected at the American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, October 1, 2016, from noon until 5 p.m. at the Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

All collected items will be distributed by Christmas Cheer to local children in need during the Christmas holiday.

Bread & Broth would like to thank Kirkwood Mountain Resort for their ongoing support of our Monday evening meal program at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. Kirkwood’s “Adopt a Day” sponsorship provided the funds for the filling and nutritious meal prepared by B&B’s talented volunteer cooks at B&B’s March dinner. That evening, the dinner guests enjoyed spaghetti with meatballs dinner that was served with sauté asparagus, green salad, fruit salad, garlic bread & assorted desserts.

Scientists have found a way to put some of the 51,000 pounds of harvested fish to good use at the same time they are ridding Lake Tahoe of invasive species.

In the first three years of a cooperative pilot program between the University of Nevada Reno and California Fish and Wildlife, unwanted fish have been donated to needy families.

Paul Joseph Fry Jr.1931-2015

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015 Dr. Paul Joseph Fry Jr. passed away in his home in El Macero, California in the company of his family. Paul was born in Dixon, Illinois in 1931, the son of Paul J. and Lauretta M. Fry, is preceded in death by his wife, Dee, of 53 years and is survived by his six children, twenty three grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Paul attended Medical School at the University of Illinois; he served his internship at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and did Residency Training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mobile food bank to be in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be in South Lake Tahoe with its Mobile Food Pantry on Wednesday, April 22nd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall to distribute emergency supplemental groceries to those who need it most.

Tahoe Area REALTOR® And His Team Raise Over $2,700 For Local Community Causes

This spring, local REALTOR® Gregory Cremeans has been actively raising funds for the Reno/Sparks Relay for Life and the Tahoe Pride Equality Scholarship program, which he founded.

In the past month, Gregory hosted a scholarship fundraiser and client appreciation party at TOAST, a locally owned restaurant in Zephyr Cove, NV. This event raised over $700 benefiting Lake Tahoe Community College students.

23rd Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run to Benefit Christmas Cheer

Tahoe Toy Run

The 21st annual Tahoe Toy Run roll through South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, Oct. 1, The South Lake Tahoe event is a major fundraiser for Christmas Cheer, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing food to needy families and Christmas toys to underprivileged children. Motorcycles will start at the Horizon Casino at Stateline beginning at 10 a.m. and parade down Highway 50, led by Santa Claus, to the Lake Tahoe Airport. Entertainment will include raffle prizes, auction, barbecue, and live music featuring the Cash Only band and Deep Fryed Mojo playing from noon to 8 p.m.
