Tahoe History Days: The Pioneers in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Looking for a family-friendly activity in South Lake Tahoe on Friday? The fireworks will be over so plan a visit to take a step back in time to visit with early pioneers.

In their inaugural Tahoe History Days, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society will start off the holiday by participating in the South Lake Tahoe 4th of July Parade. Catch them on their wagon!

Kudos: Bob "Old Long Skis" Rockwell memorial

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society would like to thank all the generous donors who honored Bob "Old Long Skis" Rockwell at a celebration of life at the History Museum Complex in South Lake Tahoe.

Memories of Bob were shared by his family and friends in front of the Osgood Toll House (OTH), the oldest standing commercial building at Lake Tahoe. It was Bob's desire to be remembered through Lake Tahoe's history. Over $4,000 in donations were received in his memory for the restoration of the OTH. Plans for the next phase were unveiled.

Memorial Service for Robert Porter Rockwell, Jr “Old Long Skis”

The community is invited to a memorial service on June 11, 2016 for Robert Porter Rockwell, Jr. who was also well known in South Lake Tahoe as “Old Long Skis.” He died on November 3, 2015, and his family and loved ones were waiting for a summer memorial service, where everyone could gather outdoors and celebrate his life.

Time running out to relocate historic Barton Ranch Complex

Unless someone comes forward with the manpower, location and money needed to relocate the historic Barton Ranch Complex at the "Y", it will be torn down. Barton family members were granted the approval for demolition during Monday's Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) special hearings officer meeting.

The public has 21 days to file an appeal to the decision or the TRPA can approve the demolition.

Rotarians clean out historic Osgood Toll House

Tahoe Douglas Rotarians spent Saturday cleaning out the historic Osgood Toll House, the oldest standing building in South Lake Tahoe. They took out hundreds of items including windows, doors, window frames, shutters and boards. After removing them they cataloged each item, cleaned and dried them and then stacked them back in the toll house.

Long before the road between Placerville and Virginia City was paved and maintained by state transportation departments, the job of keeping roads clear of rocks and snow fell on opportunistic land owners.

The steady stream of prospectors from the declining gold fields in California to the 1858 silver strike in Virginia City created considerable damage, as well as traffic jams, along the route.
