Vail Resorts to buy Kirkwood in $18 million deal

In this life, Don Ewing is a baker. In a previous life, he probably had his own TV show based on his life as a comedian who does shtick based on flour, yeast and water.
While South Shore is lucky to have Howie Nave as the emcee of all things standup comedy, Ewing, known around town as "Don the Baker," knows he can't compete on the same stage.
"I'm not really not funny," he says. "I'm not rich, either. I'm a baker's man who kneads dough."

TRPA and Placer County Sued Over Homewood
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 7:01pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency received a notice of intent to file suit on the recent approval of the Homewood Mountain Resort Ski Area Master Plan project, officials said.
EarthJustice, on behalf of the Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore, lists both TRPA and Placer County as defendants in the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court of Eastern California. Absent from the suit is the League to Save Lake Tahoe, which implied that it likely wouldn't sue when the project was unanimously approved last month by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's Governing Board.

The Great Recession continues to rear its head here at home, with demands on social services soaring and a genuine fear that South Shore’s food bank won’t be able to provide Christmas dinner for a record number of families in need.
For 30 years, the Christmas Cheer food bank has helped families celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. However, with 800 families expected to be on the list of those to receive a dinner, the charity has only 75 donated turkeys and five hams to give and organizers say they are beyond being nervous.

Attorneys General Kamala D. Harris of California and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada announced Tuesday that their states have entered into a joint investigation alliance designed to assist homeowners who have been harmed by misconduct and fraud in the mortgage industry.
By forging this alliance, California and Nevada will combine investigative resources, including litigation strategies, information, and evidence gathered through their respective ongoing investigations, assisting each state as it pursues independent prosecutions.

Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows merger complete

The previously announced transaction between KSL Capital Partners and JMA Ventures which joins Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows under one operating company has officially closed. This announcement affirms that skiers and riders can access Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows’ 6,000 acres, 44 lifts and over 270 trails on one lift ticket or season pass. The two resorts will be connected by convenient, complimentary shuttles that will provide transportation between the two resorts.
“Since announcing the merger, the Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley joint pass products –the Tahoe Super Pass and Tahoe Super Six, and Squaw Valley’s $50 million Renaissance, the response from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s president and CEO.“The opportunity to experience these two incredible mountains, each with their own unique spirit and character, through one pass and one ticket has resonated deeply with our guests,” said Wirth. To a crowd of about 200, the South Lake Tahoe City Council met to hear the 2011-12 Budget Proposal from its city manager and finance director on Thursday. There was an obvious tension between the council and members of the public who attended the meeting, though the general sentiment of the council and city manager is that the deficit issues are not their fault, and that employee sacrifice is what is required to balance the budget.
