South Lake Tahoe forecast: Hazy start and hot finish to the week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first week of September will be a warm one at Lake Tahoe. August wraps up with widespread haze from the fires north of the lake and a slightly "cooler" day. Things will be clearing out Tuesday and an unusually warm air mass takes hold the end of the week and through the weekend with temperatures likely to near record highs.

Sunny with above average temperatures this week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unusually warm temperatures are forecast Tuesday through Friday of this week as strong high pressure builds over the region and brings with it summer-like heat to the region much of this week with record highs possible. Afternoon thunderstorms could form starting Tuesday, mainly along high terrain. Storms look to become more widespread late week. Stronger winds, a few showers, and more seasonable temperatures (the 60s) are projected next weekend as low-pressure approaches from the Pacific, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater announces retirement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Another record low in South Lake Tahoe: -8 on Friday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In July 2018 there were record highs and now, seven months later, two days with record lows have been recorded in South Lake Tahoe.

The first record-breaker came on February 19 when the low of minus 13 broke the previous low of minus 8 which came 29 years ago in 1990.

The second record-break came Friday morning, February 22. The low of minus 8 was a surprise to many forecasters who had the low 18 degrees higher at 10. The previous recorded low was minus 5 in 2011.

The average for both Feb. 19 and 22 are a high of 39 and a low of 23.

South Lake Tahoe had a warm July; Week of 80s ahead

When looking back at the month of July, each day's high temperatures in South Lake Tahoe were above average except for one, which was equal to the high. Even though July was a warm month, no record highs were set.

After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.

Warm temperatures will remain in place through mid week with record highs and a few thunderstorms possible on Tuesday. Be prepared for breezy late afternoon and evening winds Tuesday and Wednesday. Cooler and breezy conditions are possible for the end
of the week.

Record highs in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, snow in weekend forecast

There was a record high temperature of 71 degrees in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, breaking the old record of 68 set in 2001. Thursday's forecast is a high of 68, and the record was 71 set in 1992. In true spring fashion, a chance of thunderstorms in the Sierra will last from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Thursday

The heat and sunny skies then go away and there is a chance of rain and snow Saturday through Tuesday, with the daily highs below average.

Temperatures well above normal as we ring in 2018

Temperatures are well above normal in Lake Tahoe and there is no snow in sight, for now. The highs will be in the 50s and will be close to record breaking.

There is a persistent ridge of high pressure along the West Coast, preventing major storms from breaking through and bringing snow to Lake Tahoe. Expect things to not change through New Year's Day, but there is some hope for precipitation at the end of next week.

A front will drop down near Susanville this weekend, but nothing is expected further south, but temperatures will drop a couple of degrees.

South Lake Tahoe: Warm temperatures leading to forecast of rain and snow

Just like the graphic in this story, which was shared on Facebook this week by Julia Montgomery of Incline Village, the weather in Lake Tahoe is going to start off the week with near 70 with clear skies, and wrap up with a chance of rain and snow and highs in the 40s.

The record highs for this week are in the 70s, with record lows recorded in the single digits and teens. South Lake Tahoe won't get to either

Tonight - Mostly clear, with a low around 31. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Plenty of sunshine this week in South Lake Tahoe

Spring-like forecast for the Lake Tahoe basin this week with a chance of precipitation over the weekend. It's going to be a warm week ahead!

Temperatures will be close to record highs and well above seasonal averages. Periods of warmth in the middle of winter are not uncommon for the Sierra and Western Nevada.

In the long-range forecast, temperatures will trend back to colder and protect the snowpack.

South Lake Tahoe sets record highs 11 of first 18 days in February

The record high temperature of 64 in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday gave the area its 11th day of record heat for the month of February (and that's just in 18 days!)

With an average low of 17 degrees and an average high of 42 degrees, the 50 and 60 degrees days at the lake have been far above average.

According to records kept by the National Weather Service (weather.gov) and intellicast.com, the following data shows the days this month records were set along with the previous high.

February 1 - Record high set at 59, former record was 56 set in 1995.

Gov. Brown urges action to reduce California gas prices

California Gov. Jerry Brown ordered the state's Air Resources Board on Sunday to take emergency steps to boost the state's gasoline supply and bring down fuel prices. Brown called on the the board to immediately allow oil refineries to make an early transition to winter-blend gasoline. Winter-blend gasoline typically isn't sold until after Oct 31.
