End time nears for El Dorado County recall against supervisors, DA and auditor

On October 27, 2015, Sue Novasel, the County Supervisor representing South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma and Pollock Pines was served a “notice of intent to circulate a recall petition” by a group of citizens who said they are “tired of the corruption and cronyism that has plagued our county for years.” It wasn’t only Novasel, but all five of the County Supervisors, Shiva Frentzen, Ron Mikulaco, Michael Ranalli and Brian Veerkamp.

El Dorado County wants input from local business owners

For the first time in seven years, those owning businesses in El Dorado County are being asked to take a survey to help enhance the economic climate for both employees and employers in the County.

Ponderosa High School coach arrested for inappropriate relations with students

The Ponderosa High School water polo coach was arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Tuesday, January 26 on charges of sex with a minor with the intent of committing sexual acts and possession of child pornography.

Shane O’Rourke, 22, was arrested after the school's resource office obtained information that a coach at the school was possibly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student. An investigation conducted with EDSO investigators determined O'Rourke had two inappropriate sexual relations with students.

Tornado touched down in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park

A tornado warning for parts of El Dorado and Amador counties has been lifted, but the National Weather Service reports that a tornado did touch down in El Dorado Hills near Folsom Lake and in Cameron Park.

Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the tornado touched down in the Browns Ravine area and damage was reported in the area of Hill View Hidden Acres and Mormon Island drives, south of Green Valley Road, in El Dorado Hills about 3 p.m. and moved eastward also touching down in Cameron Park.

Mailbox belonging to El Dorado County Animal Services broken into

El Dorado County Animal Services announced today that their incoming business mailbox in Shingle Springs was broken into over the weekend.

"Anyone who may have mailed a check to our office in Diamond Springs in the past week may want to give us a call to confirm that we received it," said Henry Brzezinski, Chief of El Dorado County Animal Services.

The Postal Service is in the process of repairing the mailbox. In the meantime, Animal Services' mail will be collected at the post office and Animal Services will pick it up daily, according to Brzezinski.

Shingle Springs daycare owner faces child endangerment and drug charges

The owner of Country Baby Daycare in Shingle Springs was arrested on Tuesday after officers found her displaying the signs and symptoms of being under the influence of a central nervous stimulant.

Brigitte McAdams, 63, was the sole adult at the center when El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the business which is inside her home. They asked her how many kids were in the home, and, according to deputies, she was unable to account for them. McAdams originally told them seven, but they found just five.

Two million dollars worth of cannabis confiscated in drug bust

A five month long investigation into the Highlands Health and Wellness marijuana dispensary in Shingle Springs uncovered what authorities say was a multi-million dollar criminal operation.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) centered their investigation on tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy and the commercial distribution of marijuana for profit.

Golf tournament to raise funds for fallen South Lake Tahoe firefighter

There will be a golf tournament at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course on Saturday, October 3 to benefit the family of fallen firefighter, Mikey Hallenbeck.

Hallenbeck, 21, died this summer after a tree fell on him while fighting his first fire as a member of the U.S.F.S. fire crew. He grew up in Shingle Springs, Calif., was living in Meyers at the time of his death and worked at Sierra-at-Tahoe during the winter.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation will host the tournament, called "Barefoot for Birdies," with all funds raised going to the family as well as the foundation.

Barton Ranch in South Lake Tahoe set for demolition

In what many locals was hoping wouldn't be the case, the Barton Ranch in South Lake Tahoe is set for demolition.

Family members who own the land and the buildings have spent years trying to get to this point in order to remove what they say is a dangerous set of buildings that have caused problems with vandals and vagrants.

On Tuesday, employees of Allied Environmental, Inc of Shingle springs were on site to remove asbestos in preparation for demolition.

Emotional honor cordon for firefighter in South Lake Tahoe

It was an emotional scene on Thursday morning in South Lake Tahoe as the local community came together with members of multiple fire agencies, the Forest Service and law enforcement to say goodbye to Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck, the firefighter who lost his life on August 8 while fighting his first fire.

The 21 year-old firefighter who died in Saturday evening as he was working on the Sierra Fire has been identified as Michael Hallenbeck of Shingle Springs, CA.

Hallenbeck was a member of Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) Organized Crew 36.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day in Meyers on July 12

Prescription Drugs are potentially dangerous when they fall into the wrong hands. The abuse of certain prescription drugs— opioids, central nervous system (CNS) depressants, and stimulants—can lead to a variety of adverse health effects, including addiction.

To get unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs off the street, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department will be holding a Drug Tahoe Back Day in the county on Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at several locations.

Counterfeit bills on rise in El Dorado County; One arrest made

Several counterfeit bills have been used for transactions on the west slope of El Dorado County, even days after the arrest of one suspect. On May 8, the Sheriff Deputies were called to the Round Table Restaurant in Pollock Pines after a man tried to buy food with a counterfeit $100 bill. He and a woman left before deputies arrived but a description of the pair and their vehicle was provided to EDCSO.

Miwok Indian Tribe's proposed gun range in Shingle Springs draws concern

A proposed 29 lane outdoor gun range in El Dorado County has created a lot of concern from the Shingle Springs community as well as others in the county.

On February 24, the County Supervisors heard a presentation from the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, owners of the Red Hawk Casino and operators of the proposed gun range. At that meeting there was a lot of concern voiced about safety and noise.

The tribe doesn't need approval due to their sovereign nation status, but they say they will address all concerns prior to moving forward.

A car crash on Highway 88 near Hope Valley Resort claimed the life of a 29-year-old Markleville man on Sunday afternoon.

El Dorado County Court News: Huntsman awaits trial in SLT; Conviction in Crime Ring

Suspected arsonist Wayne Huntsman remains in the county jail in South Lake Tahoe, awaiting his court trial. Huntsman is accused of setting the September, 2014 King Fire which burned almost 100,000 acres near Pollock Pines.

A trial setting conference has been set for March 13 in Department 2 of Superior Court of El Dorado County.

El Dorado County Sheriff: Teen steals grandma's guns, swaps for pot

El Dorado County sheriff's investigators say a 14-year-old boy traded his grandmother's guns for marijuana and they don't know who has the firearms now.

The boy, who is from Missouri but staying with his grandmother in Wilton (Sacramento County), took a sledgehammer to her safe, took her two guns inside, and drove off with her car Monday night, according to sheriff's Deputy Chris Stelz.

Full house at Supervisor's annual South Lake Tahoe meeting

Once a year the Board of Supervisors trek over the summit to South Lake Tahoe for their scheduled meeting, and if the full house of citizens is any indication, more than one of their 41 yearly meetings should be held on the eastern slope.

One agenda item brought Shingle Springs residents to town while another brought in a lot from the Meyers community.

After being dissolved in February of 2013 due to 14 of the 19 members resigning, the El Dorado County Grand Jury is once again being formed.

Search Begins in Folsom Lake for 1965 Plane Wreckage

Low water levels in Folsom Lake are allowing El Dorado County and Placer County Sheriffs to search for plane that crashed into Folsom Lake on January 1, 1965.

Frank Wilcox, a Shingle Springs man, is hoping the dramatic drop in the level of Folsom Lake will finally reveal the wreckage of the Piper Comanche that went to the bottom following a mid-air collision, killing Wilcox's older brother and three other people. Only one body was recovered. The second plane was able to return to the airport.

Explosive Device Causes Evacuation of El Dorado County Probation Department in Shingle Springs

A capped off pipe with a fuse coming out of it was found in front of the El Dorado County Probation Department in Shingle Springs on Monday morning, prompting the evacuation of 25 employees inside the building.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Demolition (EOD) personnel responded. EOD personnel investigated the object and rendered it safe with no injuries or property damage. EOD personnel believed the object was in fact an explosive device that had malfunctioned.

Law enforcement is continuing an investigation of the incident.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Department Seeks Help in Finding Missing Girl

11/12/13 update: The El Dorado County Sheriffs Department is reporting that Juliet Riffey was found on Monday, 11/11 after receiving a 911 call. The caller had reported seeing Riffey in the Cameron Park area and have classified the situation as a voluntary runaway. No other details are available.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating an At-Risk Runaway Juvenile, Juliet Riffey.

El Dorado County women indicted in nationwide $60 million tax fraud refund scheme

In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, three El Dorado County women — Teresa Marie Marty, of Pollock Pines, Rebecca Bandera-Marty of Shingle Springs, and Pamela Harris of Placerville — were charged with conspiring to defraud the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service announced.

In addition to the conspiracy count, Marty is charged with 33 counts of false claims against the United States, and Bandera-Marty is also charged in 16 of these counts.
