I want to get my 5 year old son a puppy for Christmas, what do you think, good idea or not?
Thanks,

Dear Marvin,
Save the life of this week's "Pet of the Week" by adopting her
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/01/2015 - 12:45pmOnce again, the pet of this week is Heavenly, a sweet female Pit who is about 2 years old. She is good with people and well behaved. Heavenly does, however, have a lot of energy!
She would be best in a home with no other female dogs and no cats.
Heavenly needs to find a home very soon. She is at risk of being put down very soon, so if you're interested, please visit her at the El Dorado County Animal Services, 530-573-7925.
For Spay-Neuter services and other support, call the Lake Tahoe Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at 530-542-2857.
Ask Hopeful Henry: Should I give my dog bones?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 8:37pmThis week we had a request for help from a family whose 10 month old German Shepard got his muzzle stuck in a knuckle bone purchased from a pet store. He had eaten out the center of the bone and the bone became lodged onto his jaw. After the owner tried for an hour to remove the bone it became apparent that an emergency vet appointment was need. The bone had broken his tooth and was causing extreme pain. Alpine Animal Hospital was nice enough to squeeze them in right away and was able to remove the bone with a minor surgery.

Seasonal favorites create possible distress for pets
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/19/2015 - 11:13am‘Tis the season for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.
Check out the following tips from ASPCA experts for a fulfilling Thanksgiving that your pets can enjoy, too.

Injured pink Chihuahua thrives at home in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/06/2015 - 9:51pmYou may remember the news back on January 13, 2014, when a Chihuahua puppy was found in the Bay Area with her fur dyed pink and a fractured leg. A good Samaritan had picked the puppy off the street and took her into the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) and SPCA in San Mateo, CA.
Their staff got the two-month old puppy into surgery for a hairline fracture to her right rear tibia and started her on pain medication. As she was resting at the facility the staff named her "Candy" because of her unique coloring.
