Weather systems to produce snow and rain through the weekend

The first low will move into the region late Thursday night into Friday, with moist flow continuing ahead of the next system for the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Heavenly and Northstar will open on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a combined seven lifts and eight trails, totaling 51 acres.

The strong cold front has moved into the Lake Tahoe area with snow levels expected down to the valley floors. Snowfall will be the heaviest Thursday night with lake effect snow bands possible on the east side of Lake Tahoe and in the Carson Range on Friday night as well as southeast of Pyramid Lake.

A winter storm is expected later this week that will bring strong winds, much colder temperatures and 5 to 10 inches of snow to the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Sierra and possibly 2 to 5 inches on the valley floors of Western Nevada. A strong cold front will push through the region Thursday dropping temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal by Friday through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued.

El Dorado County Search and Rescue deployed to 11 calls throughout Lake Tahoe and Sierra

Approximately 60 SAR volunteers along with four Sheriff’s deputies responded to 11 different deployments between Friday and Wednesday. Nine of the SAR events were within the borders of El Dorado County while two were in Alpine County.

Light to moderate snow is being reported this morning throughout the basin. The National Weather Service calls for 10 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet and 4 to 8 inches at lake level. A winter storm warning runs through Tuesday morning.

Nevada Emergency Management, Homeland Security hold multi-county drills

Operation Green Light will further develop and strengthen regional partnerships and enhance emergency preparedness, response, and prevention capabilities, according to Nevada Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Gail Powell.

The watch is associated with the possibility of dry thunderstorms and a strong outflow of wind. High pressure will move over the region this weekend with a moist southerly flow that will develop across the Sierra and Western Nevada, according to the weather service.

It would be par for the course given this strange weather year at the lake. Record high temperatures expected at Lake Tahoe this weekend

High temperatures today through Monday could approach 20 degrees above normal for late April. Nighttime low temperatures could be 10 to 15 degrees above normal. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday should be around 10 degrees aboe normal before near-normal readings return late in the week.
