TRPA BOARD APPROVES DOUGLAS COUNTY SOUTH SHORE AREA PLAN

A major milestone for Lake Tahoe’s restoration and environmental redevelopment was reached today with the unanimous adoption by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board of the Douglas County South Shore Area Plan—the first local government Area Plan to be enacted under the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan—according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).

Ribbon cutting ceremony at Lakeview Commons at 2 pm to celebrate the completion of the US Highway 50 Trout Creek Bridge to Ski Run Blvd Project.
The project was a decade in the planning and took 3 building seasons to complete. The project included new storm drains to treat stormwater runoff to protect the lake, ADA compliant sidewalks with lighting and landscaping and Class II bike lanes to give bikers a safer ride.
Lakeview Commons is at the corner of US Highway 50 and Lakeview Avenue.
Douglas, Washoe counties and NDOT agree to Lake Tahoe sediment plan

3-D Sandbox exhibit brings Lake Tahoe watersheds to life

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.
Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.
South Lake Tahoe appoints public works, administrative service directors

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry announced Friday the appointment of Raymond Jarvis as director of Public Works and Mary Morris as Administrative Services director both of whom will begin their service with the City on August 12.
Lake-saving incentives now part of Lake Tahoe Regional Plan
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 06/24/2013 - 12:06amNew ordinances regarding land coverage at Lake Tahoe came into effect June 19 following final approval of a key water quality plan by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and EPA announced recently.
The action updates the Clean Water Act Section 208 Lake Tahoe Water Quality Management Plan — last fully updated in 1988. The 208 Plan provides a comprehensive framework for water quality management in the Lake Tahoe basin and includes provisions for land coverage limits.
South Lake Tahoe awarded $3 million stormwater grant
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 05/14/2013 - 2:48pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe has been awarded a competitive grant from the State Water Resources Control Board through the Proposition 84 Stormwater Grant Program (SWGP).
A total of $42 million was available for Round 1 Implementation projects throughout the State that are designed to reduce and prevent stormwater contamination of rivers, lakes, and streams. The City was one of the 37 applicants to make it through the first round of the application process, and one of only 24 applicants selected for funding.
Highway 50 improvements underway in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 05/09/2013 - 12:35amA $7.3 million road improvement project has begun on a half-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans announced.
The project spans from Ski Run Boulevard to Wildwood Avenue and will allow for the collection and treatment of stormwater runoff, in addition to adding Class II bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks and pedestrian lighting. Other features include a new intersection signal, landscaping and streetscaping. Shoulders will be widened to six feet.
League to Save Lake Tahoe receives $60,000 Wells Fargo grant

TRPA announces 2012 Best in the Basin Award winners

This is the 23rd year for the program that recognizes Lake Tahoe area projects for demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with the Lake Tahoe environment. Local professionals in the fields of landscaping, planning, engineering, water quality, and resource management judged each category. A reception for all Best in Basin winners and judges will follow the awards ceremony.
UC Davis: Lake Tahoe clarity best in 10 years

Last year’s average annual clarity level was 75.3 feet, or a 6.4-foot improvement from 2011, according to data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
Homewood lawsuit remanded back to TRPA on one issue
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 01/07/2013 - 7:28pmOn the question of whether the Homewood Mountain Ski Area Resort, a ski area on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore, can be revitalized, the U.S. District Court validated all of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s environmental findings in the decision on the Sierra Club’s lawsuit challenging the project. The court remanded the case back to TRPA on one very limited issue concerning the adequacy of the economic analysis related to one of the alternatives studied, TRPA officials said.
Lake Tahoe 2035 transportation plan targets emission reduction strategies

Passage of the Sustainable Communities Strategy makes Tahoe the fourth region in the state of California to approve a plan that complies with new greenhouse gas emissions legislation, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO).
Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update approved

For the first time since 1987, Lake Tahoe has a new regional plan for development and land use.
Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.
Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

Natural forces and human actions have affected the lake's clarity, physics, chemistry and biology since 1968, when UC Davis first began continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe.
Despite an extreme weather year, overall clarity at Lake Tahoe improved in 2011. Yet underlying trends portray a more complex picture of the Lake Tahoe ecosystem, according to the annual “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2012,” released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

Water clarity at Lake Tahoe improved in 2011

Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2011 at 68.9 feet, a 4.5-foot improvement over 2010, when average clarity levels were the second-worst on record.
