Ski resorts at Lake Tahoe prepare for opening day
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 3:01pm1:30 pm update 11/15/26 - Many of the Lake Tahoe area ski resorts updated their opening dates today. Heavenly and Northstar will now open on Wednesday, November 23, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe dates have yet to be determined.

The lower elevations around Lake Tahoe have seen some snow over the past month, but nothing that stayed longer than a few hours, but the scene up on the slopes is much different.
Celebrities teeing up for Gene Upshaw Golf Tournament
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/10/2016 - 10:08pmNFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players and other sports celebrities will gather July 17-18 to once again pay tribute to the former Oakland Raider at the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at the Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.
Upshaw, who often played in the Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008 at Tahoe Forest Hospital.
Missing ski instructor Carson May found in five feet of snow
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/29/2016 - 7:07pmTwo search and rescue teams training in the snow at the Sugar Bowl Resort on Monday found the body of missing ski instructor Carson May.
The El Dorado County Search and Rescue dog teams, along with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team, located May under five feet of snow in an avalanche prone out-of-bounds area at the resort.
Carson May, 23, was a ski instructor at the resort and went missing Jan. 15, 2016. He was not found despite an intensive, four-day search by dozens of volunteers and law enforcement officers.

Search suspended for missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/19/2016 - 5:16pmIf Carson May, the missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor, is not found by the end of the day Tuesday, the Placer County Sheriff's Office will suspend the search.
The 23-year-old went missing on January 15 during white-out conditions at the resort.
Search and Rescue teams from several agencies and states have conducted intensive searches with avalanche dogs, helicopters and on the ground.
Conditions during the five days of searching have been treacherous due to frequent heavy snow and the associated risks that high avalanche danger poses to the many search and rescue volunteers.
Still no sign of missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor; Not seen since Thursday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 9:32amThere is still no sign of 23-year-old Carson May, the Sugar Bowl ski instructor who went missing after taking an after-work run Thursday afternoon, despite efforts by 60 searchers at the resort on Sunday.
Searchers were back on this hill at 8:00 a.m. today.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/16/2016 - 9:53pmThe search for a missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor has been called off for the evening by the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
More than 50 people spent the day searching for 23-year-old Carson May who hasn't been seen since Thursday when he went skiing after work.
Searchers, with the help of search and rescue dogs, have been focusing their search on the back side of the mountain where the sheriff's office has been able to get pings from May's cell phone.
Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team

Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Truckee resident Daron Rahvles will stop by South Lake Tahoe's Bank of the West on Friday to celebrate the beginning of the second stop on the Rahvles Banzai Tour at Kirkwood.
Rahvles will be at the bank, located at 2161 Lake Tahoe Blvd, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for a meet and greet,
The Rahlves' Banzai Tour is racing in it's purest form according to Rahvles' website. Big mountain freeride meets ski / boarder-cross action! The tour stops at Kirkwood on March 7 and 8, which is the second stop after February's Alpine Meadows. The final stop will March 14-15 at Sugar Bowl.

Joining them will be five-time medalist Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) as well as Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill winners Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) and Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT).

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

Conservation group seals deal to buy Royal Gorge
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 08/06/2012 - 9:38amThe famed 3,000-acre Royal Gorge property on Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada will be bought and protected from development under an agreement announced today by The Trust for Public Land, the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT), and the Northern Sierra Partnership (NSP).
The agreement is a big change for a property that, as recently as 2007, had been slated for major resort development. That proposal stalled in the face of overwhelming opposition and an unfavorable economic climate – opening the way for conservationists to buy the land when the bank foreclosed on the loan.
