Event Date:
April 24, 2020 - 11:00am

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A team of volunteers will be handing out sugar pine seedlings to students at four South Lake Tahoe school sites on Friday, April 24.

The Sugar Pine Foundation has given a box of seedlings to Bijou Community School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School. The free seedlings will be given out when students pick up their meals between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. while supplies last.

At Tahoe Valley, TRex will be on hand to hand out the sugar pines, and at the Middle School, meet Hans the service dog.

Sugar Pine seedlings need human help with watering due to lack of rain

Mother Nature hasn't been bringing the normal summer rain she normally does, so help from the Sugar Pine Foundation and their volunteers are helping the newly planted baby sugar pines to survive.

SOS Outreach Camp students recently helped water the seedlings in the Gondola Fire Area in South Lake Tahoe, and more watering trips are planned.

There are more watering days lined up that the public can participate in:

Tue, August 2, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Watering with Starbucks
Spooner Picnic Area

Wed, August 3, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Watering with Camp Explore
Sand Harbor NV State Park

BBC at Lake Tahoe to film pine cone collection days

Fall is here early and the pine seeds are ripening. The Sugar Pine Foundation has set some upcoming cone collection days so they can gather those seeds for future plantings.

This year, there are not many new sugar pines cones, but the western white pine cone crop is abundant. They will be collecting cones from the newly identified resistant western white pine at Heavenly near Maggie's Run on Tuesday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is the first known resistant western white pine in our seed zone 772, so they are very excited!

Dear Santa...

The Sugar Pine Foundation of Lake Tahoe has asked Santa for a $5,000 gift this year. That is the amount needed to plant and restore sugar pines in recent California wildfires.

The giant Pinus lambertiana (sugar pine trees) are shown uphill from these firefighters in the photo.

Sugar pines are the world's largest species of pine with the longest cones - and they are dying from white pine blister rust, a non-native, invasive fungus. Though they historically accounted for 25% of Lake Tahoe's forests, sugar pines now make up less than 5% of the forest composition.

Sugar pines need assistance to thrive in Sierra Nevada

Spring means planting Sugar Pine around Lake Tahoe

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not” — Dr. Seuss
As you may know, sugar pines and other white pines are plagued by a non-native invasive pathogen. White pine blister rust kills about 90 percent of sugar pines it infects. Scientists and restoration managers have agreed that the only effective restoration strategy is to identify seed trees resistant to the rust and plant their progeny. That is exactly what the Sugar Pine Foundation does and you can help too. Last fall, a volunteer described planting sugar pines as “creating life in our neck of the woods.”
