Give Where You Live this Thursday

Give Where You Live! is a 24-hour giving challenge coordinated by the El Dorado Community Foundation. This year's day long giving day is Thursday, April 23, 2015.

“We have approximately 70 nonprofits participating in the event this year. Each nonprofit will have its own website presence to highlight a particular need or needs for which it is focusing giving dollars, as well as more information about the organization in general,” said Megan Buchanan, donor services coordinator at the foundation.

In South Lake Tahoe, the following local agencies/services are part of the campaign. Next to the agency's name is a description of what they want to fund with donations as well as a link to donate.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services - Mentoring Campaign: TYFS matches qualified mentors with at-risk youth from their communities based on similar interests. Mentors give youth a positive adult role model, a consistent healthy relationship, and help youth to unlock their inner greatness by helping them set goals and work towards achieving them. Donate.

Tahoe Prosperity Center - Uniting Tahoe's communities to strengthen economic prosperity. Their campaign is need specific from $50 to pay for a Facebook ad to $2,500 to sponsor the Measuring for Prosperity report. Donate.

Barton Foundation - The Barton Foundation’s primary purpose is to raise funds to support Barton Memorial Hospital and provide for the health of the entire South Lake Tahoe community. Donations are need specific from $25 to sponsor a meal for a resident at the Skilled Nursing Center to $1,000 for full dental care for a resident. Donate.

CALSTAR - Repairs to the CALSTAR 6 flight crew quarters. This improvement will reduce the need for propane generated heat to keep the space warm for our base aircraft technician as he works to keep our BO105 helicopter operating safely and efficiently for the benefit of our service communities. Firefly Yoga International- The promote psychological and physical healing for survivors of trauma by providing evidence-based yoga programming, creating a network of trauma-informed yoga teachers, and contributing to the fields of public health and yoga through scholarly research. Donations fund yoga mats for survivors ($10) to $2,000 to fund three months of classes at a domestic violence center. Donate.

Tahoe Art League - Tahoe Art League is a non-profit organization that has been serving South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area since 1964 providing our community with scholarships, classes, arts shows and more. Donations are need specific, from $150 to fund supplies for Art Angel Program to $1,000 to fund a scholarship to a Lake Tahoe Community College student. Donate.

Tahoe Arts Project - TAP reaches over 5,000 students, within 10 schools in El Dorado, Douglas, and Alpine counties of California and Nevada. The artists whom students meet through the TAP programs serve as role models that demonstrate the values of self-discipline and the pursuit of excellence. Donations are fund specific, from $25 for a teacher's supplies to $2,000 for the purchase of a new sound system for school performances. Donate.

Sierra at Tahoe Foundation - the Give were you Live donations will go towards our scholarship fund and to help get our athletes into National level competitions. Thank you for the support and contribution to our local kids. Fund a need from $30 for one team competition to $1,000 for 1/2 year of training for a full-time athlete. Donate.

Sierra House Growing Dome Program - This program allows the diverse groups within our community to work together in a community-based project free of language, generational, and social barriers. By coming together to grow food locally, sustainably and year round, we will create a healthier, stronger community for our children. Fund requests from $10 to buy one classroom's Garden Journals to $1,000 for lumber, soil and compost for raised beds. Donate.

Sugar Pine Foundation - The Sugar Pine Foundation is dedicated to saving Lake Tahoe's sugar pines and other white pines from blister rust by educating and involving the local community in hands-on forest stewardship. Fund a need from $10 for 8 pairs of children's gloves to $1,000 for 250 students to take part in an environmental day. Donate.

Live Violence Free - In order to allow children a safe space to heal from the trauma they have experienced as either victims or witnesses of abuse, Live Violence Free also provides children’s therapy for child abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence. Funding is need specific from $25 for art supplies for children's therapy groups to $500 for 8 therapy sessions for a survivor of domestic violence, sexual abuse or child abuse. Donate.

South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center - The mission of the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center is to enable individuals and families to maintain their health, to achieve self-sufficiency and economic stability, to develop resilience in both parents and children, and to enable families to become a contributing part of our community. Fund specific from $25 to provide one week of snacks for 60 kids enrolled in socialization classes to $1,000 to purchase summer learning supplies for 80 kids. Donate.

County wide giving campaigns that include local groups:

Friends of the Library - Goal is to enrich the lives of El Dorado County residents by advocating the use of our libraries and to support our libraries through fundraising efforts which include memberships, gifts and endowments. Fund requests from $25 to buy a senior a new, large print book to $5,000 for a year of Bookmobile visits to senior apartments and preschools. Donate.

CASA El Dorado - Their purpose is to ensure that every abused and neglected child that ends up in foster care in El Dorado County, through no fault of their own, has that same opportunity. Donations go to their twelve-for-one program..12 people donating $100 each cover costs to provide a CASA advocate to a foster youth for one year. Donate.

Ag in the Classroom - Ag in the Classroom provides high quality educational programs – like Farm Day, Teacher Workshops, and Fields of Learning – for students, teachers, and the public to increase awareness of the importance of agriculture in our lives. Donations range from $25 to pay for a student to attend Farm Day to $100 to send a teacher to a workshop. Donate.
