Summer Festival

August closes with a Chautauqua presentation “Sisters of the Sage” which will highlight the lives of Annie H. Martin, Lillian V. Finnegan and Anna N. Harris at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 pm.

These three influential women from the early days of Nevada will meet to reminisce about their early lives, the suffrage movement and their accomplishments as women, in both Carson Valley and Carson City.

The month of August begins with a presentation on “The Great State Embezzlement”, Mo’z Motley Blues in concert and a presentation on “The History of Baseball in Nevada” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Sunday, August 4, at 10:00 am, Glen Whorton, President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, returns to the park to speak on this year’s topic “The Great State Embezzlement”. This is a free event for all to attend.

This month, Todd Morgan & the Emblems return for a third season and historian Dr. Michael Fischer will speak on the history of the Nevada Buckaroo at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Thursday, July 25, at 6:30 pm, Todd Morgan & the Emblems will be performing modern pop/rock and roll, blues, funk, disco, hot jazz, country and early rock ‘n’ roll.

Chautauquan Kim Harris will portray Lizzie A. Borden on Wednesday, July 10, at 6:30 pm, and historian Mark McLaughlin will speak on “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era; Stories, Facts and Fun” on Saturday, July 13, at 10:00 am, at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Lizzie Andrew Borden was tried and acquitted in a court of law for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The court of public opinion sentenced her to a life of public scrutiny and branded her a social pariah.

The Old West Trio returns to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park this coming week in an evening concert, while two local musicians are featured at the park’s upcoming Neighbor Fair, an event highlighting Carson Valley’s non-profit organizations.

Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 from 10:00am to 3:00pm both days.

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West returns to Dangberg Historic Park for a third year on Saturday, August 25 with festivities beginning at 2:00 pm. This is the park’s final special event of the 2018 Dangberg Summer Festival, focused on raising funds to support the operation and future of the park.

Chautauquan Deke DiMarzo will portray Watchman Alex Coryell: Virginia City Police Department 1873 to 1891 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:30 pm.

Alex R. Coryell was a watchman for the Virginia City Police Department from 1873 until June 25, 1891. Coryell was a Civil War veteran who left the state of Virginia after the war and moved to Virginia City, Nevada. His family became well known and prominent in Virginia City, with one of his relatives becoming a pharmacist on C Street.

Chautauquan and noted local historian Michael Fischer will portray “Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr.” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 4, at 10:00 am.

H. F. Dangberg, Sr. helped to shape the agricultural and livestock history of Carson Valley. Beginning with 160 acres in 1856, Dangberg built an empire of ranches and farms that covered over 30,000 acres by 1902 when he formed the H. F. Dangberg Land & Live Stock Company. Some of the irrigation ditches, canals and reservoirs he dug are still in use today.

Authors Karen Dustman and Laurie Hickey will speak on their book The Old Genoa Cemetery: A Walking Tour – Book 1, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 28, at 10:00 am.

The Old Genoa Cemetery: A Walking Tour – Book 1 is the first book in a four volume series of books written by historians Karen Dustman and Laurie Hickey, which highlight Genoa and Carson Valley’s earliest and most prominent settlers.

Music, artisans and food come together at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 28 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in a “Musical Jamboree”.

One definition of a jamboree is “A large celebration or party”. The Musical Jamboree at the Dangberg Home Ranch is designed to be just that. The musical talent of the day comes from four different genres.

Author and grandson of Fred Dangberg Jr., Steve Achard will speak on his book Lost Legacy of Carson Valley, as well as his memories of growing up at the Home Ranch, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, July 15, at 10:00 am.

The book Lost Legacy of Carson Valley, which Steve Achard co-authored with Conrad Buedel, shares the history of H. F. Dangberg Sr., as well as the rise and fall of one of Nevada’s most prominent pioneer families.

Chautauquan Doug Mishler will portray circus showman P.T. Barnum at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 11 at 6:30 pm.

Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American showman, politician and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The circus business was the source of much of his enduring fame. He established "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome", a traveling circus, menagerie, and museum of "freaks", which adopted many names over the years.

The Old West Trio will bring classic Western music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, June 28.

The Old West Trio is celebrating over 20 years of performing Western-themed music, from classic Sons of the Pioneers and Gene Autry tunes to contemporary Americana masterpieces. The trio are also recipients of the 2011 Western Duo/Group of the Year and a top-five nominee for 2014 Western Duo/Group of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists.

The Mylo McCormick Project will bring blues, funk and rock music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, June 21.

The Mylo McCormick Project is a four-piece band, led by singer-songwriter and musician Mylo McCormick who has also performed with Moz Motley Blues band. McCormick has earned a reputation as a masterful young guitarist with tasteful riffs and solos comparable to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has performed funk and blues at venues around Lake Tahoe, the Comstock area and throughout Carson Valley.

Chautauquan Tom Lorentzen will portray American author John Steinbeck at 6:30 pm, followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada at 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 13 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. Among his classic works are The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. Although most recognized for his fiction, Steinbeck also wrote non-fiction.

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West returns to Dangberg Historic Park on Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 am as the park’s final major event of the 2017 Dangberg Summer Festival.

The show features Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, the Pony Express, The Mayfield Gang and the 1st Nevada Cavalry. The Douglas High School Marching Band and western singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins return for a second year to draw the audience back in time to the frontier of the American West.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre festival schedule this summer is a full one and they've added a new event this summer, Evening Music on the Lawn.

The grand lawn at Valhalla has been a popular spot for Sunday afternoon concerts and now there will be two evening lawn concerts in 2017. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper and enjoy some music, there will be a beer and wine garden too.

The featured tellers at this year’s event are Willy Claflin, world music percussion band The Batamba Collective, Mother Lode Storytelling Guild tellers Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon, and chautauquan Larry Lippmann as “Hank Monk”. The weekend also features early afternoon shows specifically for families and children, an open mic storytelling concert and a storytelling group Carson Valley Memories led by Nancy Raven.

The five-piece band Mo’z Motley Blues will perform blues, rock pop and soul at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 22.

Monique DeHaviland and the Mo’z Motley Blues Band have been performing originals and 5 decades of cover music with blues infected rock, pop, soul, and country repertoire geared to make audiences move from the minute the music begins.

The band was founded in 2012 and members come from the surrounding Reno-Tahoe area. Band members are Monique DeHaviland, Samantha Moore, Mylo McCormick, Don Lalonde and Ian McDonald on horns.

Valhalla wraps up their annual summer festival with two concerts in the Boathouse Theater on August 24 and 31. The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival is Lake Tahoe’s premier summer long festival of world class live music, theatre, visual and cultural arts, bring a wide range of activities to the historic estate.

Lake Tahoe’s 36th annual Valhalla Arts, Music & Theatre Festival opens June 17 at the historic lakefront Heller Estate (Valhalla) on the South Shore. Exclusive “one night only” performances will deliver a high caliber lineup of music and dance performances to Lake Tahoe’s arts and culture scene. Master Scottish Fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, will strike the first chord of the summer festival in Valhalla’s celebrated Boathouse Theater with Lake Tahoe as the backdrop, in a rare and highly anticipated solo performance.
