Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/29/2016 - 5:44pmIts been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.
In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/12/2016 - 11:23pmNFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players and other sports celebrities will gather July 17-18 to once again pay tribute to the former Oakland Raider at the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at the Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.
Upshaw, who often played in the Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008 at Tahoe Forest Hospital.

Truckee resident Daron Rahvles will stop by South Lake Tahoe's Bank of the West on Friday to celebrate the beginning of the second stop on the Rahvles Banzai Tour at Kirkwood.
Rahvles will be at the bank, located at 2161 Lake Tahoe Blvd, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for a meet and greet,
The Rahlves' Banzai Tour is racing in it's purest form according to Rahvles' website. Big mountain freeride meets ski / boarder-cross action! The tour stops at Kirkwood on March 7 and 8, which is the second stop after February's Alpine Meadows. The final stop will March 14-15 at Sugar Bowl.
Five Tahoe/Reno area skiers named to US Ski Team
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:43pmWorld Champions Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) headline a strong group of 26 athletes, 14 men and 12 women, named by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to compete in the 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships Feb. 2-15 in Vail/Beaver Creek on home turf. Joining them will be five-time medalist Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) as well as Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill winners Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) and Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT).

Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/16/2014 - 12:03amTwo American men won medals in Sunday morning's Super G race in Sochi: Andrew Weibrecht from Saranc Lake, NY wins the Silver while there was a tie for the Bronze between Bode Miller from Easton, NH and Jan Hudec from Canada. With a time of 1:18:14, Kietil Jansrud from Norway won the Gold.
25 year old Travis Ganong from Truckee came in 23rd. Earlier in the week Ganong finished 5th in the Men's Downhill.
Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe Places 8th in Sochi Super G
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/15/2014 - 1:23pmNorth Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso led Team USA once again Saturday, posting the best American finish in eighth at a rough and unforgiving super G, the final women’s speed event of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games. Another difficult course set plus temperatures in the 40s yielded DNFs in seven of the first eight racers, but Austrian Anna Fenninger dialed it in for gold on the inconsistent course.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/12/2014 - 6:56amSuper combined bronze medalist Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe led the U.S. Ski Team with eighth in Thursday's Olympic downhill as Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Tina Maze of Slovenia made history with a tie for gold. An Olympic medal tie has happened four times since 1948 in alpine skiing, but before today, had never happened for a gold medal.

Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) added to the U.S. momentum with ninth, her best super G finish since 2007. Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl won the race, which was a replacement for the canceled super G race last weekend due to a powerful winter storm that sidelined the weekend’s speed events.

Two of Lake Tahoe's most popular ski and snowboarding icons, Daron Rahlves and Jeremy Jones, have finished shooting public service ads this week for the nonprofit Tahoe Fund's Plate for Powder program. Rahlves and Jones donated their time for the California and Nevada Lake Tahoe specialty license plates program, which gives new Tahoe license plate buyers two free Alpine or Nordic ski tickets to their choice of 12 major Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts.
