New camping ordinance approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent decision that stated cities cannot criminalize sleeping on public property where there is no alternative shelter space available, the City Council Tuesday updated South Lake Tahoe's camping code.

Prior to Tuesday, the City Code prohibited camping on all public property, except in areas specifically designated for camping, but that was not enforceable since there is no permanent shelter in South Lake Tahoe at this time, just seasonal.

Nevada Governor visits Lake Tahoe for Tahoe Beach Club groundbreaking

"It's going to be an interesting journey," then-TRPA director Juan Palma told Bob Mecay back in 2002. Little did Mecay know then that it would take until 2016 to see completion of that journey.

Mecay, President of Tahoe Beach Club, unveiled the end of the journey in a beachfront groundbreaking ceremony Monday in a spot that will see 143 condominium residences, a private beach club, two to five-bedroom condominiums, a private pier, lakefront clubhouse, health club, spa and pool.

The remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.

This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.

The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.

BMP Retrofit Project Approved for Tallac Historic Site

The U.S. Forest Service has released details of the final BMP project for the Tallac Historic Site. The project will reconfigure the three entrances to the site in order to reduce confusion of travelers and create a more efficient use of paved surfaces. There will also be an internal road created to serve as a connector between Tallac, Kiva and the Visitor Center so vehicles will not have to exit to Hwy 89 to move about.

This project was first proposed in January of 2011. Work may begin in Spring of 2015 and is expected to take 10 years to complete.
