South Tahoe High Cheer Team wins first place at Davis competition

The Varsity Cheer team from South Tahoe High is bringing home a first place trophy from the United Spirit Association (USA) California Open held at UC Davis on Sunday, February 1.
The STHS girls won the "Varsity Show Cheer Advanced" category.
Cheer and dance teams from Northern California competed.

A free, all day workshop about teaching science to children will be held at the UC Davis Tahoe Center for Environmental Science on January 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
They will present an overview of the Next Generation Science Standards, tips for becoming a better science teacher, sample activities to present the new standards, as well as tie-dying the scientific way.

Dr. Dori Borjesson from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will speak about current veterinary clinical trials using stem cells to treat inflammation and spinal cord injury in small and large companion animals.
Borjesson is a veterinarian and Professor at UC Davis, specializing in regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy.

Shortly after graduating from UC Davis in 1983 and working at wineries in Napa Valley and the Santa Lucia Highlands, Jonathan Lachs and Susan Marks took desk jobs in Silicon Valley. High-tech was the couple's ticket to their dream vineyard and winery -- but it wouldn't be in Napa or Monterey.
While at Davis, Lachs had tasted a 1980 Madrona Vineyards Chardonnay from the El Dorado Hills -- a wine so pure it sealed his fate.
"The wine was so refreshing, bright and true to character compared to the big oaky wines that were popular at the time," he recalls.

New interactive science exhibit coming to Lake Tahoe

The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded $150,000 to the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) to create a new, interactive public exhibit at the Tahoe Science Center, located in Incline Village. The exhibit will merge the results of citizen science with TERC’s new, real-time monitoring network that is being installed around the lake to understand and improve the clarity and health of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.

State of the Lake 2014 report released; Expect longer summers in Lake Tahoe

By the end of the century Lake Tahoe summers may be two months longer than they were in the 1960s and the maximum temperatures may have risen by 8 degrees F. Those were part of the predictions released in the State of the Lake 2014 report.
Data collected over the last 50 years, combined with the monitoring of Lake Tahoe during the 12 months of 2013, was presented at Thursday's unveiling of the report at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences (TERC) in Incline Village by Director Geoff Schladow.

The board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializes in interventional sports medicine and spine care.

Dr. Alison Ledgerwood will hold a lecture on Thursday Evening, July 17th at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Arts. Her behavioral science research suggests that negative thoughts are cognitively “stickier” than positive ones— but with some effort, it seems we can retrain our brains to focus on the upsides.
Non-Native Fish Found in Lake Tahoe

Lucas McNamara, 7, was hiking around Griff Creek near Kings Beach Fire Station last week with his family when he saw a black, spiny fish, about 1-foot-long, lying dead in the creek. He ran up the creek bed, yelling, “Dad, you need to look at the big crazy fish!”
Lucas’ parents, Steve and Jen McNamara, decided to make this a teachable moment for their son, who already shows active interest in science and the environment.
“I told Lucas that this fish is not normal for Lake Tahoe and may be harmful to the other fish and animals in the lake,” Steve said.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services department started their STAR (South Tahoe Adventure Recreation) camps this week. Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.

Tahoe Environmental Research Center Appoints New Associate Director

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center has announced that Zach Hymanson has been appointed Associate Director. Zach replaces John Reuter, Ph.D., who served in this position since the inception of TERC in 2004.
Zach Hymanson was previously the founding executive director of the Tahoe Science Consortium, and a senior staff member at the California Tahoe Conservancy. He brings many years of experience working at the interface between science, government and environmental management, and will continue working in this area with TERC.

House Blows Up in Pollock Pines

As El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home in the 6000 block of Pony Express Trail they heard an explosion. The residence was engulfed in flames and a male associated with the house was detained according to EDSO.
The unidentified male was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Lake Tahoe Loses 5 Feet of Clarity in 2013; Winter Waters Clearer, Summer's Declining

Clarity levels within the iconic blue waters of Lake Tahoe continued a decadelong trend of stabilization in 2013, according to University of California, Davis, scientists who study the lake.
Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC)and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2013 at 70.1 feet. While the reading represents a 5 foot decrease over the previous year, it is still well above the lowest value recorded in 1997 of 64.1 feet and above recent years' averages.

Report: Lake Tahoe clarity improves but climate change threatens lake over long-term

While clarity improved at Lake Tahoe for a second straight year in 2012, long-term trends show that climate change is impacting the Lake Tahoe Basin with drier years, less precipitation, higher lake temperatures and projected lower lake levels.
These conclusions are found within the lake's annual health exam,"Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2013," released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.
Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Timothy Cashman named Tahoe Fund board chairman

The Tahoe Fund is kicking off its 2013 fundraising season with the announcement of four 2013 Signature Projects that will help restore Lake Tahoe clarity and improve recreation in the Basin.
The projects include beach improvements at Sand Harbor State Park, Asian Clam control in Emerald Bay, a mile of bike trail along the West Shore, and a new bridge across Angora Creek in the Washoe Meadows State Park. Interested donors can learn more about these projects on the Tahoe Fund website here.

Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.
UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

Join UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center for an Open House at the Tahoe City Field Station (Historic Hatchery) at 2400 Lake Forest Road from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Visitors can tour the historic building, talk to TERC scientists about their work, and learn something new about Lake Tahoe. Local garden clubs will be on hand to give plant selection and gardening advice, and Red Truck of Truckee will sell food and beverages.
