Tahoe Best in the Basin Award winners announced

Seven outstanding restoration, sustainability, and construction projects were recognized as recipients of Best in the Basin awards by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during an online meeting of the agency’s Governing Board. The projects and programs each exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in environmental stewardship in the Lake Tahoe Region, according to the agency.

6th annual Wildfire Expo in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The public is invited to attend the 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday, June 15 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the TJ Maxx parking lot located at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe where Highways 50 and 89 intersect.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, along with multiple local agencies, are coming together to help everyone know how to create defensible space around their home, how to make a home escape plan and other ways to be prepared in the case of fire. Smokey the Bear will make an appearance.

There will be refreshments, a raffle, fun and education for the whole family.

"Wilder than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future" to be shown around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - The award-winning documentary "Wilder than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future" will be shown at three locations around Lake Tahoe in the coming weeks, starting on Thursday, May 30 in Incline Village.

Wilder Than Wild is a one-hour documentary that reveals how fire suppression and climate change have exposed Western landscapes to large, high-intensity wildfires. The film goes on to explore strategies that are being developed to help mitigate the impact of these fires.

5th annual Wildfire Safety Expo in South Lake Tahoe

Several area agencies have teamed up with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue to participate in the 5th annual Wildfire Safety Expo in the TJ Maxx parking lot at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 9 from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Learn about how planning is the most important tool in staying safe during a wildfire, including creating defensible space and having a home evacuation plan.

There will be informational booths, refreshments and fun activities for the whole family. KRLT-FM will be broadcasting live and Smokey the Bear will be making an appearance.

Several activities during Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Month

Learning to be Fire Safe in South Lake Tahoe

With fires already burning out of control in Alaska and Southern California, there is no time like the present to learn how to prevent fires.

The Wildfire Safety Expo was held Saturday in South Lake Tahoe, and kids and adults alike learned not only fire safety tips, but were able to interact with the multiple agencies in the area that fight and prevent fires.

Also on hand at the Expo were law enforcement, TRPA, the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

It's Not a Matter of "If" a Wildfire Will Happen in Lake Tahoe, It's a Matter of "When"

Can you survive the next wildfire in Lake Tahoe? Yes, if your community is prepared.

The Lake Tahoe Basin's firefighting agencies and UNR Cooperative Education have come together to promote the "Fire Adapted Community Concept." This type of community has five elements:

1. Community Protection - Well-designed fuelbreaks and safe areas protect the community.
2. Defensible Space - Proper management of vegetation surrounding the home reduces the wildfire threat.
3. Access - Good access helps emergency responders arrive in a timely manner.

Inaugural Wildfire Safety Expo to be Held in South Lake Tahoe
