Editors narrowed national nominations to the top 16; readers weighed in and the largest and most popular alpine lake in North America took home top honors by garnering more than 5,000 votes via Facebook and Twitter.

Volunteers are needed for the 23rd Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at the Lake Tahoe Airport. More than 10,000 spectators visit the Lake Tahoe air show each year. This event is made possible by community volunteers, local organizations and business owners. Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

The agency that oversees Lake Tahoe is reworking its regional plan. It's the first big overhaul since 1987, and the initial draft has raised concerns about how much and where commercial development will be allowed.
Alex Leff, with the conservation organization Friends of the West Shore, says the main draft plan would allow significant commercial development on recreational land, which makes up 22 percent of Lake Tahoe's Basin.

Ensuring their part to keep the shores of South Lake Tahoe clean and tidy, organizers of Live at Lakeview will hold its next beach cleanup at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 30, at Lakeview Commons. Organizers will provide trash bags and gloves. They ask for volunteers and their friends to head to the beach and show their support for the enormously popular concert series by cleaning up the beach and surrounding area.

A South Lake Tahoe man faces an attempted murder charge and two others are being sought in what authorities said was a gang-related shooting in June that involved a pedestrian and a vehicle.
On Friday, authorities obtained a warrant and arrested Cesar Caro, 19, at his South Lake Tahoe home. He faces charges of attempted murder in the June 27 incident. His bail was set at $150,000.

After nearly a four-year absence, 50-year-old survival expert Les Stroud will return as Survivorman on Sunday August 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Earlier this year, Stroud traveled to the mountains of Norway and the desert island of Tiburon in Mexico to record four new hour-long shows for Discovery. He left as he always does, without food and water while hauling 65 pounds of camera gear to record his every move. Everything was the same, except this time Stroud decided to up the ante by spending 10 days alone in the wilderness instead of the usual week.

On Wed. Aug. 1, Bona Fide Books will host a reception for graphic novelist and artist Jared Manninen and his collection "Based on a Dream" at Bona Fide HQ in Meyers from 6:30-8:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided.

To many residents of South Lake Tahoe and Colorado Springs, Colo., they're heroes. But for the U.S. Forest Service Meeks Bay Fire Station Engine 43 crew, who helped save homes during the Waldo Canyon fire, they're just doing their job.
