Vendors sought for Festival of Winter Lights in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Festival of Winter Lights returns to South Lake Tahoe on Friday, December 8, and Saturday, December 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. It will be held in the parking lot of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center.
This event will feature the museum's annual Holiday in History, Borges winter carriage rides, a lighted outdoor winter market, Santa's house and kids activities, holiday music performances, and hot food and wine.
Liberty Utilities postpones planned power outage in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities has postponed its planned power outages for this upcoming weekend, October 7-8.
Businesses and residents near Rufus Allen Blvd would have been affected by the power outage.
Liberty Utilities had originally planned to message those in the area and leave door notices.
The planned outage will occur at a future date.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local artist, teacher, and muralist Matt Kauffman is having a one-man art show at the Lake Tahoe Community College Foyer Gallery. Titled "Paper Halo," the collection of art is a commentary on the things we value, and hold important.
"Sometimes the least meaningful things in life can occupy all of our attention and rob us of the joy from that which matters most," said Kauffman.
The two-month-long show opens with a reception on October 5 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The show runs through December 8.

We represent religious and spiritual communities across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe and in El Dorado County. We make this unequivocal statement in solidarity with the Jewish community in our county and across the country:
The antisemitic hate speech that overwhelmed the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, during the meeting's public comment periods was un-American, un-Christian, and does not and will never represent our communities. Hate is not welcome here.
Douglas County School Board special meeting with termination of superintendent on agenda

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The newer members of the Douglas County School Board (DCSB) have not kept their feelings about Superintendent Keith Lewis a secret, and according to their special meeting agenda, that relationship is about to end.
On Friday, October 6 at 3 p.m., the board will be meeting at Douglas High School's Media Center, and the public is invited to attend in person, or on Zoom (instructions here).

New water year underway, California prepares for a possible wet El Niño year

The start of a new water year in California has the state's reservoirs above average after they were able to capture a total of 3.5 million acre-feet of water in reservoirs since December 1, 2022.
On Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) highlighted how the State and its federal and local partners are preparing for the new water year that started on October 1. DWR said they are also preparing for the possibility of another wet season under strong El Niño conditions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six people were recognized as the community's unsung heroes during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the South Tahoe Chamber.
The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.
Nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alerts Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET (11:20 a.m. at Lake Tahoe).

Douglas County Community Health and Quad County Public Health are both holding flu vaccination clinics at Kahle Community Center on Wednesday, October 4.
Even though they are Nevada agencies, they will be accepting South Lake Tahoe residents as well as Nevada residents.
High-dose vaccines are available for those 65 and older in limited quantities at both events. If you do not have insurance, you will not be turned away.

If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks may continue understory burning over the next two weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may continue burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake. The Honorable Richard Glasson will officially retire on October 5, leaving the remainder of his term to be filled.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a dusting of snow on the mountaintops around the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend, but there is no more precipitation (rain or snow) in the 7-day forecast. Much of the week will be rather dry along with a general warming trend as the low progresses eastward. Temperatures will see a steady climb through the week after Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The only wrinkle in the week will be a reinforcing shot of cold air late Monday into Tuesday morning across eastern NV. This will slow the warming trend by a day or so.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – At their next meeting on October 5, the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners have an item on their agenda that states a presentation and possible discussion will be held on vacation home rentals (VHRs) after a petition was filed by five residents to amend the VHR ordinance. The commissioners are set to discuss the financial impacts such an initiative could pose for the county - a loss of millions of dollars.
South Tahoe High earns WASC accreditation through 2029

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accrediting commission has completed its evaluation of South Tahoe High School (STHS) and has granted it a six-year accreditation status through June 30, 2029.
"I'm proud of the school," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler. "I'm really excited about the accreditation and pleased with their designation of six years with a three-year revisit. It shows the hard work that our school put into it."

STATELINE, Nev. — Nigerian heavyweight Efe Ajagba hopes to take a giant leap towards a title opportunity when faces upset-minded Australian Joe Goodall in the 10-round main event Saturday, Nov. 4 at Tahoe Blue Event Center at Lake Tahoe. This will be the first boxing event at the venue, which opened earlier this month and had its first concert, Pitbull, this weekend.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – Rounding out its 49th year, the Sierra State Parks Foundation looks back fondly on almost five decades of philanthropy and community building. It began when a scrappy, local grassroots group of women resolved to save the impending demolition of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point State Park; the group would later become an incorporated Cooperating Association supporting California State Parks in 1974, adopting other local state parks in the Tahoe Truckee region to preserve and protect.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold storm arriving in the Sierra Nevada Friday, bringing with it gusty winds and a quick (and, this time, shortlived) transition to chilly and showery conditions this weekend into early next week.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued south of Lake Tahoe, in Mono County.
The best potential for showers, even some high-elevation snow, will be from Saturday into Sunday.
Friday afternoon at Lake Tahoe will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 66. Southwest wind will be around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Far-right extremists and hate groups have taken over the public comment periods at meetings across the state. It wasn't just El Dorado County's Board of Supervisors meeting this week, but it was also the government meetings of Sonoma County, Saratoga, South San Francisco, El Cerrito, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Monterey, and the list is growing. The comments have harassed officials and disrupted meetings with hate-filled messages targeting racial and ethnic minorities, the LBGTQ+ community, and the Jewish community.

Suicide is a major public health concern. Suicide was responsible for over 48,000 deaths in 2021, which equates to one death every 11 minutes. The suicide rate among people aged 10–24 increased 62 percent from 2007 through 2021. This has deeply impacted individuals, families, and communities.
Every person can play a role in helping to prevent suicide by knowing a few key things and where to get help.

It was a busy week for Tahoe Forests Matter, attending several local agency meetings via Zoom or in person. The following statement was issued through public comment at the El Dorado County Supervisors and South Lake Tahoe City Council Meetings on 9/26 and at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Board Meeting on 9/27. A similar statement was made on 9/21 at the Skyland neighborhood meeting regarding the upcoming “fuel break” project in that area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced the changing of the name of Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) to Meyers Elementary School, Home of the Bears. The new name is actually the same as the original when the school opened in 1967.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Sawdust drifts into a small pile as a volunteer cuts a fallen log into six-foot lengths. Around her, a team of five is busy lopping pine boughs and carefully placing timber across a narrow stretch of Saxon Creek in the community of Meyers, mimicking the work of beavers who once lived there. If they’re successful, this “beaver dam analog” will help restore the creek’s natural, meandering course, filter out sediments that degrade Lake Tahoe’s clarity, and invite the beavers to return.

Seniors, Inc hosting Ice Cream Social and month-long game of Hand and Foot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Senior Citizens Inc. is holding an ice cream social as well as scheduling the game Hand and Foot for a month.
On Sunday, October 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., join them for an Ice Cream Social at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center. People are encouraged to bring a friend as a possible new member, age 50+. This event is for senior citizens only.
Public comments during El Dorado County BOS meeting filled with antisemitism and profanity

El Dorado County, CALIF. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday turned into a blitz of antisemitic hate speech during the meeting's second public comment period of the day.
Caller after caller spoke during each of their three-minute time allotments via Zoom, each of them filling the 180 seconds with derogatory comments about those of Jewish faith, as well as profanity.
DCSO asking for public assistance after man speaks to children inappropriately at Target

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the Target store on September 26 on the report of a male adult who had reportedly been making conversations with children and allegedly speaking to them in an inappropriate fashion while inside the store.
These incidents were reported to have occurred on September 20 around 7:15 p.m., and on September 25 at an unknown time.
Sculpture made entirely of trash from Lake Tahoe unveiled at Tahoe Blue Event Center

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - “Surfaced,” a new art installation created with more than 450 pounds of items recovered from last year’s 72-mile scuba cleanup of Lake Tahoe, was unveiled Wednesday at the new Tahoe Blue Event Center.
The art was created by Oregon-based and internationally recognized artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova of Building 180.
