The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from March 17 to April 13, 2016.

3/17 - 11 calls: 5 EMS, 1 interfacility psych transfer, 1 building fire, 1 wildland fire, 1 call to assist invalid, 2 canceled en route.

3/18 - 6 calls: 2 EMS, 1 system malfunction, 1 excessive heat and scorch burns with no fire, 1 assist invalid, 1 canceled en route.

3/19 - 13 calls: 9 EMS, 1 canceled en route, 1 false alarm, 1 smoke detector malfunction, 1 invalid assist.

Just as people are seeing some extra cash in their pocket with tax returns being processed, scams are on the rise in South Lake Tahoe, and elsewhere, trying to cash in on the extra dough.

In South Lake Tahoe last week, a woman who was selling furniture was caught up in a scam that ended up costing her $1,500, the same price she was selling the items for. According to El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Seligsohn, scams are getting more sophisticated such as the vacation rental scams, but the sold furniture scam this victim fell for is very common.

It was down to the 11th hour, Chris Brackett had to be out of his South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle location and had no place to go with all of his boards. He was in the same situation as Rude Brothers, the bagel and coffee shop that shared the same location. With the building sold and all tenants given notice to move, both businesses needed to relocate.

A relatively weak Spring storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it modest rain and snow amounts as it moves through the Sierra and western Nevada on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels will be down to around 4500 - 5500 feet. Although it will be cold enough for widespread snow showers, there won't be much in the way of snow totals with this storm though the West Slope should see more than the Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno. On Wednesday, the NWS in Sacramento forecast 4"-8" for the higher elevations.

Mountain Resort Television reporter Mikaila Bird interviews Sherry McConkey, Director and Founder of the Shane McConkey Foundation, a non-profit founded in the celebration of Shane McConkey's life, and supports all aspects of the Lake Tahoe community and schools nation-wide.

Investigators from the Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden's office were at the Tahoe Keys Marina again on Wednesday, trying to find the source of an oil leak that was discovered on Monday, April 11. They were joined by a press information officer and a biologist, all from the agency's pollution office.

They said was no wildlife impact found at the scene, and all fish in the shallow marina and birds in the area didn't appear to be harmed by the oil.

Local curling and skeleton bobsled athlete, Larry Sidney, will be featured as a guest reporter for Mountain Resort Television and their Lake Tahoe News Line featured on South Tahoe Now and seen on KAME-TV, My21TV.

Larry, a South Shore resident, is a member of Lake Tahoe Epic Curling, competing internationally with the Israel Curling Federation, and a competitive skeleton bobsled athlete for the Israeli team.

When people visit Tahoe for the first time, they marvel at the extraordinary natural landscape and fresh, clean air. At the same time, some are shocked at the dilapidated condition of the built environment: rundown buildings, crumbling infrastructure, and tired-looking development. The paradox is compelling. Despite TRPA’s mandate to harmonize the natural and human-made landscapes so that they blend together, outdated development that preceded environmental standards now serves as blight in our community.

A rock slide near Johnson Pass Road closed both lanes of Highway 50 at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Most of the rocks could be moved to the side of the road, but two large boulders had to wait for heavy equipment to be pushed off the roadway according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both lanes were closed but Caltrans is now allowing intermittent traffic through. As of 7:30 p.m., one large boulder remained. They expected to be done with that boulder by 7:30 p.m.

A new group has formed on the South Shore, one that will focus on the promotion and success of local restaurants. Membership is open to any local restaurant owner or manager. They meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Tahoe Chamber's conference room, for now.

Dozens of employers will be on hand at Tuesday's Tahoe Regional Community Job Fair at Harrah's Tahoe from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Local businesses are looking for help to set up concerts in the area this summer, staff for golfing, boating, casinos, summer adventures on the slopes, retail, restaurants, the Forest Service, construction, lodging and banking to name just a few.

The Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites the public to their next Fireside Chat and Spring General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the historic Camp Richardson.

With the return of road improvement projects along Lake Tahoe and other Nevada roads, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol are reminding motorist to drive safely in road work zones, not only during this week which is National Work Zone Awareness Week, but all year long.

From July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015, there were 166 crashes in Washoe County work zones, resulting in 53 injuries and two fatalities. Statewide in Nevada, these numbers were significantly hire during the same periord: 1020 crashes, 612 injuries and 12 fatalities.

Weather permitting, California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, April 11, 2016.

On the East Shore - 32 acres at Sand Harbor, 28 acres at Spooner Summit and 200 acres at Camp Galilee.

At the April 5 Council Meeting, Mayor Wendy David declared that comments by the citizens during the non-agenda portion of the Council Meeting will no longer be televised. It has been suggested that this was done to “prevent staff and others from begin slandered.” Except for Councilmember Conner’s request that this matter be placed on the agenda, the rest of the Council was silent. No motion, no vote, no agenda item, just a bare statement by the Mayor that the policy was changed.

The wet winter has proven useful for Lake Tahoe. For the first time in 10 months, the lake reached the its natural rim Saturday, April 9, 2016. This last happened in June of 2015 when the lake stayed at or slightly above the rim for a 5 day stretch between June 10th and June 15th. Prior to that, the lake had been below the rim since October 16, 2014.

Lake Tahoe Ski Bum is hosting "Dual on Dynamite" at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, April 8. This is a dual format bump race that includes professional judges, discounted lift tickets and awards. All proceeds go to support the Sierra Avalanche Dogs.

Olympian and South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral will be once of the judges and celebrities at the event along with Robbie Huntoon, Warren Miller ski sensation and stunt skier in the movie Hot Dog, Daffy Don Ramirez, Murky Mark Watters, Flying Pineapple George Blackbern, U. S. Freestyle Team Judges, Coaches and former mogul competitors.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding the death of Carson Valley veterinarian Lance Gorrindo earlier this week:

“At the time of Lance Gorrindo’s death he was the sole suspect being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in connection to an active Lewdness with a Minor investigation. The identity of the victim is confidential by law and not subject to disclosure.”

Formal charges had not been filed against Gorrindo prior to his death, according to Carson Valley Times.
