"Go Local and Win" is the holiday campaign offered the Tahoe Chamber to encourage people to shop in town and not off the hill, and by doing so shoppers can win weekly prizes.

The first winner was announced today, just for shopping on the South Shore and submitting her receipts. Jennifer Lay won a Heart Rock & Herb gift basket and is now in the running for the grand prize at the end of the year.

It was a changing of the guard during Monday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. Wendy David moved from her position of mayor pro tem to mayor, and Austin Sass took over the second-in-command duties.

Councilmember Tom Davis, who has served as both mayor and mayor pro tem, was also interested in a fifth term in the pro tem spot but the nod went to Sass.

The details haven't been worked out as of yet but South Lake Tahoe is going to have a warming room to keep those without a home warm during winter according to the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless.

A lease has been signed for 981 Silver Dollar, the former offices for the El Dorado County Mental Health Department.

During Monday's City Council meeting, coalition board members Nicole Zaborsky and Scott Weavil said it was a long search for a property that would best serve the community in keeping the homeless warm during freezing winter nights in South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Community College will officially be closed for Winter Break from Friday, December 18, 2015 through Sunday, January 3, 2016. Classes will not be held during this period, and most of the offices and departments on campus, including the library, will not be open for business. The Winter Quarter will begin on Monday, Jan. 4.

The college’s Child Development Center, however, will be open on Mon. Dec. 21 through Wed. Dec. 23, when the hours will be 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The CDC will then close from Thurs. Dec. 24 until Mon. Jan. 4, when normal business hours resume.

It is still a few days away, but the warnings are already being issued for a winter storm headed to the Sierra Nevada.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe, starting late Wednesday day and going until Thursday night. The National Weather Service issued the warning, saying there is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may create hazardous driving conditions.

A new website puts comprehensive information about the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program at everyone’s fingertips, allowing people to easily learn more about “Lake-Saving Projects” completed in their own neighborhoods and all around Lake Tahoe.

Work on all Lake Tahoe basin projects is either suspended for the season or completed. Here is an update on all projects. There is still road work being done on a stretch of Highway 50 in El Dorado Hills:

The hunt is over for the suspect in the October 14 drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe that sent a 19-year-old man to the hospital.

Samuel Tovar, 43, was arrested after a high-risk search warrant was served at 816 San Francisco Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4. Inside they found Tovar, who had been avoiding law enforcement since the shooting.

SOS Outreach, a non-profit serving South Lake Tahoe youth, launched their winter mountain program at Heavenly Ski Resort this weekend. Vail Resorts and Heavenly donate instructors, gear and access to the mountain. For their first day on the mountain Saturday, SOS had 75 at risk and underserved youth for day one of a five day Learn to ski/snowboard Program.

SOS uses core values and positive adults while teaching youth to ski or snowboard.
Each day of activities staff and youth participate in has a focus, and this first day on the slopes was "courage".

Fresh powder apparently isn’t the only thing hitting Lake Tahoe in December.

Ridesharing service Uber is planning a simultaneous launch on both sides of Tahoe before the end of the year, filling a key market in its Nevada and California territories.

Uber was not able to provide a specific date for the launch but it could happen as early as late next week, spokeswoman Laura Zapata told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

If you’re enjoying the holidays with a drink, South Lake Tahoe Police Department has a message for you: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers from December 18 to January 3.

Every year in November, Ameriprise Financial advisors and employees participate in national days of service in partnership with Feeding America. This effort centers around helping the 49 million Americans, including 16 million children and 5.3 million seniors who face hunger in the U.S.

On November 9th, the South Lake Tahoe Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. office sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment”, organized by Rick Gross, to join this nationwide effort to feed the hungry.

The annual Light Up Lake Tahoe parade led people through town Saturday night on their way to light the Christmas tree at the Y. Carolers kept the crowd entertained, as did cocoa and cookies, as they waited for Santa to arrive via fire truck.

With temperatures sitting at 30 degrees, bundled up children and their parents, and local community members counted down the flipping of the switch for the tree which will stay lit through the holidays.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Peewee Team is the 2015 Pacific District Regional Silver Stick Champions in the Peewee B division which has earned them a spot at the International Finals in Ontario, Canada. In order to help the young boys and girls with travel expenses, the team has started a fundraising campaign selling "Tahoe Strong" T-Shirts.

All 14 team members have excelled not only on the ice, but in the classroom according to fundraiser organizer Tye Watson. They players come from South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, Reno, Carson City and Minden.
