Authors to speak on Historic Bodie Railroad

Event Date:
June 19, 2016 - 10:00am

Authors Wanda and Richard Canton will speak on their book, Bodie Railway & Lumber Company: Railroad in the Sky 1881–1917, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m.

The Cantons’ book tells the story of the dream of bringing timbers and cordwood to the remote mining town of Bodie, Calif. by train. In 1880 the mining town of Bodie was located at over 8300' in the eastern Sierra. The plans for a 32-mile narrow gauge railway developed through hard work and some luck as well.

Alpen Sierra Coffee Company is providing complimentary coffee and 88 Cups & More is providing pastries for visitors throughout the series.

Richard and Wanda Canton lived in the eastern Sierra for 22 years prior to moving to Minden. The Cantons have been members of Friends of Bodie Railway & Lumber Co. since 1998 when the Bureau of Land Management offered the group permission to reclaim and restore a railway flatcar that ran between Mono Mills and Bodie from 1881 to 1917. Many pictures telling the story of the 32-mile railway are preserved in their book which was compiled and published in 2011.

This is an outdoor event and open to the public. Please bring your own seating, and a shaded seating area is available. Dogs should be left at home. The park is a Douglas County facility and is subject to all applicable rules and regulations. For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org.
