SLT Soroptimist members teach local youth 'A Fighting Chance '

Members of the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) spent the month of May teaching the program, A Fighting Chance, to students at Bijou Elementary, Sierra House Elementary and Tahoe Valley Elementary.

This program was started by South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Brooke Laine and members of SISLT shortly after the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard, and trains children in elementary schools the key steps in avoiding stranger abduction. The program starts in the 3rd grade with lessons about how to be safe, and progresses through 4th, 5th, and eventually 6th grade, where techniques are provided to avoid being kidnapped and how to get away from possible abductors.

Since it's start in 1997, SISLT has brought this program to 22,000 students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Members said they appreciate the support they receive from teachers in helping to keep this program alive.
