Letter: Overlooking the Obvious - Vote Yes on T

Measure T is not about the Loop Road. It is about power. If and when there is a Loop Road Plan, there will be components that will need the city’s approval. The two biggies will be accepting the old Hwy 50 as a city street and using eminent domain to tear down many houses. The point here is that the city will be making decisions. Measure T is about who will be making those decisions: A majority of city council, i.e. 3 people, or 9000 voters.

I hold the idea that overlooking the obvious can be easy to do. I went to a city council meeting last month where the 2-foot model of the sculpture honoring our 3 female Olympians was revealed. It was picked by a committee. The sculpture was of 3 men. Are you kidding me? We bought a million dollar fire truck and when the truck arrived, it didn’t fit in the fire house. Nobody measured. We built an addition for it at the Al Tahoe fire station costing a lot more money and then we closed that fire station down. We completely upgraded Harrison Ave. and the new fire truck can’t fit down the streets or turn the corners there. We won’t even talk about The Hole. Who overlooks this stuff? Probably we all do.

There are a lot of decisions we can let our city council make. But when it comes to a $100 MILLION project, it’s just too easy to overlook details and it is a lot safer to have 9000 pairs of eyes watching out than just 3. VOTE YES on T. It is the wise thing to do.
